50/50 - he will absolutely get pardoned, but if he does it himself it will be a much bigger legal / moral / constitutional mess so he’ll probably do that
Except that only protects from federal charges and a preemptive pardon would not look good if there are state charges.
And a follow up to this “what is the downside” - increasing the risks of a terrorist attack seems more important than humoring Trump.
