I thought this too, but when you look at the timeline, Johnson/the Govt's ratings had actually already gone up before Johnson got it. He didn't really get a bump from contracting COVID.

It was also before a lot of people had personal experience with COVID or the impacts on their lives of it - losing loved ones to it, job losses, not being able to visit family/friends etc
