The confederacy had multiple flags in its short existence. The "Battle Flag" seen above was not the official flag, but it was used on the battle fields and thus the most seen/flown flag at the time. It was (and still is) such a part of the confederacy that it was incorporated into later versions of the official flag.
Given that the confederacy never achieved independent status and was mostly just an army of rebels not a country, I'd say the battle flag more appropriately depicts the confederacy.
