CNN didn't want to go to court because going to court would have cost them more in attorney's fees than what they paid Sandmann (and his attorneys). Just as was done by the Washington Post after the case against them was initially dismissed with prejudice before being partly reinstated.
The Sandmann's and their right-wing provocateur attorneys are getting what they want - publicity. They most certainly are not getting millions, much less hundreds of millions.
