I trust that they are measuring the current state of unhappiness. Whether closer to the election that unhappiness has changed, or the person they feel is the best to improve the situation are entirely different questions though.Isn't he great?
A paranoid lunatic. Leader of the free world.
It's fantastic.
Annoyingly, that's the tactic that will make this election close. Those poor uneducated largely white male people in the US that won him it in 2016 still feel left behind and the Dems still come across as sneering and condescending. I just don't trust those polls, at all.

I trust that they are measuring the current state of unhappiness.
With less than five months until the 2020 elections, Americans are deeply unhappy with the state of the nation. As the United States simultaneously struggles with a pandemic, an economic recession and protests about police violence and racial justice, the share of the public saying they are satisfied with the way things are going in the country has plummeted from 31% in April, during the early weeks of the coronavirus outbreak, to just 12% today.
Anger and fear are widespread. Majorities of Democrats and Republicans say they feel both sentiments when thinking about the country, though these feelings are more prevalent among Democrats. And just 17% of Americans – including 25% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents and 10% of Democrats and Democratic leaners – say they feel proud when thinking about the state of the country.
They go low we go high..It's weird how bad the Dems are at making effective anti-Trump commercials relative to some (rightly) pissed off Republicans.
Doesn't job approval cover that?Yes, but I'm wondering where those people place the blame.
For example, I honestly think the BLM stuff might have hardened Trumps base and the "anger" is at the state of the country rather than him, and they blame "progressives" for destroying the place.
If the poll was "do you blame Trump for the state of the country" it'd be more conclusive in terms of the support of his base; I don't know if such a poll exists.
Donald Trump’s job approval rating has declined since the spring. Currently, 39% of U.S. adults say they approve of how he is handling his job as president, while 59% say they disapprove. In March and April of this year, during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S., larger shares said they approved of Trump’s job performance (45% and 44%, respectively). While Trump’s job rating has declined in recent months, it has now returned to about where it had been throughout much of his presidency.hasn't that "are you happy with the way things are going in the country" historically been one of the most consistently reliable predictors of Presidential election results?I trust that they are measuring the current state of unhappiness. Whether closer to the election that unhappiness has changed, or the person they feel is the best to improve the situation are entirely different questions though.

This doesn't mean a lot of Trump people are suddenly seeing the light. A large portion of the dissatisfied will be that way because Trump hasn't been allowed to do enough of his agenda, or because the Democrats have bothered to do anything at all to oppose him, or because of the media, or because black people have dared to want equal rights but it won't be because of Trump and they'll still be voting for him.I trust that they are measuring the current state of unhappiness. The Democrats don’t need “Trump people” to win the election. This doesn't mean a lot of Trump people are suddenly seeing the light. I agree. I just thought that graph needed a bit of context because the implication to me is that Trump is losing a lot of people and that isn't necessarily true as to why people are "dissatisfied" with the country's direction. The Democrats don’t need “Trump people” to win the election.
Anyone who is still with Trump at this point isn’t shifting.
There’s plenty of data out there that he’s lost significant numbers of floating voters and even chunks of what was formerly his base (particularly the elderly) recently.I agree. I just thought that graph needed a bit of context because the implication to me is that Trump is losing a lot of people and that isn't necessarily true as to why people are "dissatisfied" with the country's direction.
I know my family would say they're dissatisfied and they will not be citing Trump.
Right they need the sensible right leaning folk and the so called fence sitters. The Democrats don’t need “Trump people” to win the election.
Anyone who is still with Trump at this point isn’t shifting.

Trump’s job approval rating declines

While Trump’s job rating has declined in recent months, it has now returned to about where it had been throughout much of his presidency.
The recent decline in Trump’s job approval can be seen across most demographic and political groups. For instance, Republicans and Republican leaners are now 7 percentage points less likely to say they approve of Trump than in March (78%, vs. 85% then).
