Covers it in one.

The second part is key.

He didn't just laugh. He then joked about the pan handle being the only place someone could shoot someone and get away with it.

Instead of saying nothing or shutting the person down and saying we don't talk like that he eggs them on. Joking or not mental cases and extreme types will always say he was being serious and calling out to them to do something

Am I the only one who is slightly alarmed by his correlation between mental illness and hate/racism as the components behind mass shootings?

Seems a rather antidiluvian attitude to being poorly.
And mental health is only discussed after some shootings

The American Psychological Association weighed in on Monday in a statement: “Routinely blaming mass shootings on mental illness is unfounded and stigmatizing . . . The rates of mental illness are roughly the same around the world, yet other countries are not experiencing these traumatic events as often as we face them."

That's the other thing if the right really think it is mental illness what are they doing to fix or help that?
What have they done in the past to fix or help people with mental illness.
So many veterans have PTSD and the right has twice this far withdrawn funding to the military in certain areas including for health related issues.

All they do is say thoughts and prayers and its mental illness and they move on like that's not something they can help with or find to study more at the very least. Its cause and effect based studies that could really help at a bare minimum if that's truly what they believe.

Yep. Then he went on to say he would lock them up. He used a different phrase, but the tenor is the same.

It's all very Nazi Germany

Funny you said that. I was watching a documentary on the history channel about Hitlers rise to power and one of the things he always did was pretend to be as common as the working man. Pretended to be skint just like them. He also took donations from the wealthy for his movement and then used it on funding his extravagant lifestyle and vacations.

Now i am not saying Trump is Hitler by any stretch but there are similarities in their persona and actions.

Sadly he is not alone.
If Trump loses, there is a sub group that will never believe the results because they truly believe their mindset is the in majority.

I'll give him one thing though - he's sort of right on one thing. And that's the election of Trump in 2020, if it happens, will be down to largely one thing - the disgust of the average person at the constant outrage culture, generally perpetuated by the left.

This is a big reason as to why Trump has been allowed to flourish. Yes, we should all be outraged at things like Sandy Hook - but when the Twitterati are equally as outraged at substantially more minor things, all the bloody time, then outrage completely loses its' value.

Elections are won and lost on swing voters - those on the middle ground who can go either way. What's happened in the last decade is that the middle ground has shrunk and people have become camped into extremes, feeling forced that way because of how loud the opposing voices are. You either have an extreme view on everything or you're drowned out by the noise.

Whether it's Brexit or Trump, the left has to take as much responsibility as the right for the world we're currently in. While TX Bill is a bell, there really is a kernel of truth in what he's saying, despite the fact he revels in the fact Trump is benefiting from a world gone wrong.

There is no mainstream ‘left’ in America though. You can be right wing and be anti homophobic/racist/sexist etc. The reason trump can win is that he just pedals a simpler narrative.

The left in America isn't as 'left' as here, but it's an undeniable fact that the Republicans are broadly VERY right wing, whilst the Democrats - whilst not of course socialist in the way of Corbyn or even Milliband - are still so far to the left of the Republicans as to be considered comparatively 'left wing'.

Of course, the response to Trump has seen the Democrats go further left in recent years, with Sanders influence and, very recently, 'The Squad' revealing a shift for the Democratic identity overall. It would be a mistake for the Dems to counter Trump by going more extreme in the opposite direction - they just need a common sense voice.
