I think we get the drift.

Unbelievably irresponsible journalism. This kind of fear-mongering could lead to him being murdered. The worst thing about that is you'd even get democrats happy about the possibility of that happening, rather than them rallying and getting a half decent candidate for the upcoming election campaign to try and defeat him in a legal way.

They can live where they want, but there has to be a system. That's how society works, by most people following the rules. If everyone who wanted to live in America was allowed to just by showing up at the border, where would that leave the welfare bill, where would leave schools, healthcare and what would it do to wages for the low skilled? How would towns and cities across America absorb all these millions of immigrants, many of whom might have no desire to assimilate and potentially have criminal backgrounds?

Japan is an interesting example of a country with practically zero diversity, basically no history of immigration. Japan also has incredibly low levels of crime and tops lists of health and education. Their economy is also the 3rd biggest in the world

Bryan Caplan explains things better than I'll ever be able to. I highly recommend his book.

lol lol lol
Irony is dead. Trump shot it in the middle of 5th Avenue and didn’t lose any voters.

(But for the record, that magazine cover was 2 years ago, and he seems to be alive and well, so don’t worry your little head about him too much)

Trump is more a symptom than a cause, at least as far as our politics go.

The Party of Fox became a post-truth party years ago. The undercurrent of racism has been there since the Nixon realignment. McConnell is the one who made Al Davis's "Just win, baby" slogan the party mantra.

The Democrats failed to muster a coherent response because they are fragmented between an insurgent, populist left-wing that wants change but can't design realistic proposals, and the faction that is just as bought and paid for as the right is. Citizen's United gave free license for Silicon Valley, Wall Street, Big Pharma and the rest of the Fortune 50 to do more or less as they please, as it's cheaper to pay off politicians and then pay the toothless fines that Congressional oversight then tolerates than it is to follow the law.

What Donald Trump HAS been a cause of is the appalling decline of civility in this country since his election. I turned left to get to a drive-thru today after getting tailgated for the last half-mile by a sedan. The Corvette that I was behind and I followed the traffic pattern around the right side of the building. The sedan whipped around to the left (blocking a single lane of traffic coming blindly around the building) and turned around to cut us off. After he got his food, instead of pulling forward he then whipped back around immediately (again blocking a single lane of traffic going in the opposite direction and risking a head-on) having saved himself perhaps sixty to ninety seconds by jeopardizing everyone's safety twice. I'd never seen anything like it.

He probably looked at us and thought, "Suckers". I looked at him and thought, "Trump voter". I know which I'd rather be.

Are you seriously blaming Trump because someone acted like a tit at a drive thru??

I almost got wiped out on a motorway the other other day because someone was in the wrong lane has their exit approached, do you reckon that was trumps fault

The world is full of grade A bells; trump being a prime example before he was president. Not everything bad that happens to you is because of Trump

Before Trump was elected, such incidents happened with far less frequency, and never that severity. The shift has been very noticeable.

To borrow your phrasing, Trump acting like a tit has given people that are tits license to act like a tit. Leadership (or a lack thereof) matters.

Tbf, Chris is right. This is availability bias and, while it could well be true, would need more than anecdotal evidence to really support it

Do you live here? I get that these are one person's observations, but I can also report that they are well-supported by those of friends and family, who are of both political persuasions.

There are plenty of surveys out there that will tell you that there's been a huge shift in Americans' level of concern regarding civility since the start of Trump's candidacy.

It's well-documented that the more radical elements of the left have decided to fight fire with fire as a tactic politically (and defend it as necessary to social justice as civility is an "elite" construct), which is stupid and just plays into Trump's hands. King got things done; Malcolm X did not. Just saying.

As for the people being tits also being the Trump voters - this is basic identity theory. A significant fraction of the people that identify with him have embraced being a boor in everyday life. The people that reject him tend to reject the behavior, as they would be ashamed to be confronted with having behaved like him.

It does not follow from the above that all Trump voters are boors; I live in a county that's about 2/3 Republican, and many of them are genuinely nice people. But what I am saying is that the ones that have seemingly seen fit to unleash their inner id for no good reason since his election are broadly his people.

He's also not the only cause; social media has been a huge problem, particularly among the younger set. The people I'm singling out are the ones that are old enough (the guy in the story was +/- 40) to know better.

But the basic point is this: I don't consider it a coincidence that selfish, rude behavior that would have been considered downright bizarre a few years ago has erupted in everyday life subsequent to the election of someone that has violated virtually every norm of selfishness and rudeness associated with the highest office in the land.

I don't agree with your specific incident but I do agree with the second part especially regarding racism and nationalism. Those people are absolutely emboldened because the person running the nation is basically saying everything they would say in private in a complete public setting.

No I don’t, but I have family who live in Queens and Long Island and I’ve visited NY on multiple occasions.

I’ll tell you that the majority of Americans I have come across, especially in Manhattan, are condescending, irrational and constantly in a rush. Manners is few and far between in your great country

In my opinion of course, don’t want you blaming my views on Trump

New York isn't a patch on London when it comes to bad manners. Can only speak from personal experience, but we could learn a lot this side of the Atlantic from Americans when it comes to being well-mannered and courteous to people.
