The whole messaging of “no, we won’t discuss any compromise deals or your SOTU until the government is open” pretty straightforward but hard to carry out in practice.
If

Exactly. The SOTU message particularly had an impact in showing Trump that things have changed as a result of the November elections

Utterly disagree.

She definitely had the better hand, but she played it well and held the caucus together when it would have been very easy to pay the ransom for the hostages that trump took

I didn't say she did badly. I just said she was given an open goal. She'd have to be Corbyn-like to mess it up. She wasn't.

A bit surprised he didn't just do this, actually... He'd get to play Action Man to impress his dimwitted base, which is what he does best, and the Dems would get to be shrill and take umbrage, which is what they do best.

Win Win.
unless his intention is to sew unrest and jam up the cogs of government as much as possible without losing his job

Here's his executive branch version of bankruptcy:
(1) Declare the emergency on Feb 16
(2) Watch the emergency declaration get tied up in federal courts for the next two years
(3) Blame the activist federal judges for blocking the needed actions
(4) Claim victory and never mention the wall again.

He wins because he took action
GOP wins because this is off the table in terms of legislation and election issue for 2020 congressional races
Dems lose an issue to bang on repeatedly for the next two years

there's a chance the Dems might be quite happy that this is/might be off the table. They already have a win with Pelosi last week, now they can make all sorts of promises to dreamers post 2020 and ignore the nuts and bolts of immigration which might upset some blue collar voters that they really need.

I wonder if his supporters will eventually tire of him having such a thin skin, even to comparably mild criticism from Fox anchors.

In a Wall Street Journal interview published Sunday, Trump hit back at Ann Coulter, a conservative author whose threats about the defection of the president’s base were credited with pushing him to his once-uncompromising stance. When he backed down on Friday, she called him a “wimp." “I hear she’s become very hostile,” Trump told the Journal. “Maybe I didn’t return her phone call or something.”

Also on Sunday, he attacked two top reporters for Fox News Channel , his news channel of choice, saying on Twitter that they had displayed “even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC!”
Together, the swipes represent one more piece of evidence that the dawn of divided government has put Trump in a dangerous and defensive political position, compounded by the indictment Friday of his longtime associate Roger Stone. They show just how much he depends on positive punditry and other forms of approval. And they telegraph his sensitivity to criticism, particularly from people he has identified as friends, loyal to his often-dubious claims.

Or Pelosi could play a next level game of chess and put forth a bill funding smart border security measures utilizing technology instead of an archaic wall to silence the false narrative that Democrats don't care about national security.

I mean if BBC can get some of the most incredible footage of nature with motion activated cameras, one would think something as simple could be used to alert folks along the border of a breach.

Make David Attenborough head of Homeland Security!:pint2:
