here's the thing: why is it so bad that Russia benefits? they've done good work in Syria (better than the US debacles of Iraq and Afghan).

Not really. Trump quite rightly wants Germany and other members to cough up more money for their own defence and NATO. The USA is paying a disproportionate amount of money. Now that is obviously through choice, but nonetheless it is true. Trump in his cack handed way of diplomacy only knows one approach.....

Which is fine and I agree with the "pay your fair share". But it just came out that he literally was actively trying to leave NATO.

It’d be much easier to not believe if he hadn’t come across as so anti-nato In much of his rhetoric . I stand to be corrected but I don’t think any US President has ever repeatedly described NATO as obsolete . Continuous tweets about how much it costs , how it’s unfair or how it’s a worse deal than NAFTA hardly fills you with confidence .

As it happens like you I think it’s extremely unlikely they’ll withdraw but given he apparently pulled the troops out of Syria after a phone call to erdogan without consulting his advisors you can see why concerns are raised . Also what I think is relevant is that when he constantly derides any news he dislikes as fake it means you never know the truth , so now even if it was fake how would you know ? He’s the very epitome of the boy who cried wolf .

But isn't that the point? We have a US President that says such crazy things that the usual response, from EVERYONE, both foreign and domestic, friend and foe, is ignore what that guy is saying, he clearly doesn't mean it. Let the adults in the room talk.

This is the supposed leader of the free world

USA has often had deviant Presidents: Clinton the sex pest, Obama the drone bomber, Bush Jr the invader, Trump the troll etc
