Merica confuses me, so please bear that in mind with this random question. Been reading about the confederate flag being a symbol that gets mixed reviews, so to speak, and a statue of General Lee.

So, and apologies if this sounds trite and/or offensive, but would the 1970s/80s TV version of The Dukes of Hazard be seen in a different light these days? (Confederate flag/General Lee being the car) Much like some sit coms in 1970s UK would not see the light of day today.
Great question, I’m in a meeting, let me chew on this

Interesting question that. I enjoyed Dukes of Hazzard as a kid.

Which 70's UK shows wouldn't see the light of day today? Benny Hill?

Love Thy Neighbour springs to mind. Black and White Minstrel Show, most comedians on New Faces/Opportunity Knocks, Mini Pops, On The Buses, thats without really trying.

ok, never heard of any of them. i only lived in England between '89-'04, mind. I know about Porridge, Faulty Towers, Some Mothers, Fools & Horses...i think they're 70's/80's. Probably still fine now.

Words of a racial nature were routinely used to describe Blacks. Sexism was unbelievable. At the time, no one batted an eyelid, these days, not a chance.

Hence my Dukes of Hazards question.

Yes the car would certainly not be named that and presented that way on today's television. Personally I haven't seen enough of that show to know if anything else in it would be left out. But there are many American movies and shows that looking back definitely would not be made today for a myriad of reasons

The bar owner being called Boss Hogg? To me, these days, seems to have connotations to Slaves calling their owner, Boss. Or am I reading too much into that?

go on what?

I said -
do forward thinking students upset you Yoda?
to which you replied -
Do you agree with people destroying historical monuments? No matter what that represent?
What you going on about:) show the question I asked you. I haven’t a clue what your point is here!!

But as for your question, I don’t know any forward thinking students, only impressionable my lecturer (is a god) types who have never had to stand on their own 2 feet. The students who i respect make their own minds up and are not sheep and concentrate on what they can achieve not what they should be entitled too!!

That's possible. Again the show is a little before my time so I can't really say. I know about the car and that's about it

I didn't grow up in America but I do get the impression that the dukes of hazard was acceptable because it was like a carriacture of the south. Let's make a show based in the south, lets give them banjos and a car called the general lee. You can be sure the black community hated it but they had worse to worry about, like actual segregation, not only in the south but here in Boston and all over the country.
In recent years, you wont see a re run anywhere as people realize that although it was harmless in intent, it was offensive to a large portion of the country.
It's not snowflake revisionism.
Here's a tweet that kinda sums it up.

Spend copious amounts of time looking for something that’s not there, you’re guaranteed to find something. Everyone can twist and interperate to suit their own agenda. Learnt some of this here:)
