Dominic Calvert-Lewin watch

Sometimes a relationship has just run its course

You could tell by the end DCL needed a fresh start, as we did

We always knew he had the overall skill set to be a good striker - even when he wasn’t scoring for us he did other things welll like hold up play, but his time here was over. It got to the point where every time he had a chance you just knew he was missing it.

It is what it is

He rejected the contract mate.
He was mulling over an offer in February. He wanted x amount, the club and him was off on that. Moyes and the club, had enough of the negotiations and basically walked away. They then re-started those contract talks again in May but both parties knew it was time to walk and part.

He was crap for us for the last 5 seasons. It would be like selling McNeil and him assisting or scoring in 7 or 8 games in a row would we all be crying for him to come back and say he's brilliant? No because he's also been crap for us just like DCL was
He is playing in a 4 4 2 maybe along side Alcaraz he nay have done well - but his contract demands it seems like Leeds took a chance on him - DCL would be be better than Beto & Barry combined - but may struggle we will never know now- I think he just wanted away plus more money- nothing new into days game .....

What it boi
It's the clearest explanation for the turnaround in form.

He's scored half of what he managed in his last four seasons for us. He clearly wasn't arsed.
Missed big chances aye but never looked like he’d stopped trying. he was playing for the worst everton team I’ve ever watched. People said he’d do better under a different manager but people weren’t having it.

Good luck to him. We didn’t play to his strengths but that was due to our circumstances and his - he gave us some moments but he needed a new challenge and that’s why he’s doing well now.

Time will tell this form is the new DCL or him proving himself at his new club.

The one thing we did do though was give him a kit that fit him.

Behave.

With 8 league goals he's beat what he managed over any of his last four seasons here. Lukaku he most definitely was not.

We didn't let him walk for free. We made him multiple contract offers that he rejected. He CHOSE to walk away from this club after not bothering to perform for most of his last contract here.

He could have outscored Beto last season so if he had been arsed one bit to do so.

Its all a cope on your part as hes making you look a bit daft.

Some of us could see the issue. Some of us repeatedly said he'll hit double figure league goals if he left Everton, like so;

That assist, and his level of performance vs Liverpool is something I dont think any others of our team can replicate.

Get some wingers who can cross a ball, or composure in/around him and he'll hit double figures.

If he can stay fit as much as last season - he'd easy hit double figures league goals in Newcastle's team.

Vastly underrated here.

In an attacking team, with width who can cross a ball - he scores double figure league goals easy.

... some of us, felt Beto was better and we'd easily replace him.

Yikes.

I wouldn't be surprised if I could ask the universe one question and it was 'were Everton actually cursed or was we just paranoid?' and it saying 'ye lad you were 🤣 '

We legged a lad who had turned down multiple previous contract offers and then came to us with his begging bowl out in the last month of his contract after not performing for the last four years of his contract.

Let's stop rewriting history.

It did not make sense to hand a lad who's highest league scoring figure was 7 in the past 4 seasons with an over 100k contract when we were just coming out of PSR nightmares.

He always thought he was better than he actually was and thought one of the big boys would come in for him. When he realised that was never going to happen he started talking us up and how he would stay.

He was mulling over an offer in February. He wanted x amount, the club and him was off on that. Moyes and the club, had enough of the negotiations and basically walked away. They then re-started those contract talks again in May but both parties knew it was time to walk and part.
He also got another bad injury around February at Brighton IIRC

That probably had an impact on the negotiations

Leeds are playing to his strengths. We did not. Its no coincidence that his best spell at us was under ancelotti.

Theres a sating about confusing malice with incompetence, the incompetence was the clubs play style and consequential lack of supply.

The only maliciousness came from the fanbase, giving him grief online while he had mental health issues, booing him when he was injured.

To be fair Jake, if he wasn't arsed, taking all that into account, I dont blame him.

We did give him chances for tap ins that he put wide or over the bar. It's not the drought of chances some people would like to claim for Dom while jumping on the backs of Barry and Beto if they don't score every chance. Look at the abuse Beto got yesterday for generating a good save from the keeper from a half chance.

Agendas all over the shop as is standard these days.

Any abuse he got from the fanbase was frustration from the fact that he hadn't performed here for 4 years, after the last big contract he demanded....

Exactly. We would not have been overpaying him in total as his purchase price/amortisation would have been zero. He was probably our cheapest option. But I don’t blame him for wanting a clean break.

On the end of a passing move where every player on the team touched the ball today, as opposed to trying to flick on goal kicks that come down with snow on them. Fair play to him.

To be fair, he missed countless sitters in the last couple of years so that may have continued if he’d stayed. But I thought he always put in the effort, just as Beto does. Was always about the missed chances, and the crap players around him.

He’s moving round the pitch now really well, breaking into sprints rather than looking like he is waiting for something to snap. Regardless of his history with us, that’s great to see.

If we paid him what he wanted he'd be an Everton player.

We made a call, and time will tell. Currently its looking a bad call.

Shame we couldn't get Delap rather than Barry. But even Barry, has the issue Calvert Lewin has. No full back who can cross a ball. No pace. But least he has Grealish and Dewsbury Hall.

The answer is in the middle

He definitely wasn't set up for success at Everton but he also missed so many chances last 2 seasons. He was one of the most underperforming players in the league under their expected goals.
No denying that but he’s a confidence player and his best performances for us, was when he didn’t have to think about finishing. It was instincts with him when it came to finishing. His hold up play at times was great but for me, he’s a average and not good enough for Everton but knew he’d thrive away from Everton.

The pressure at Everton was too much for him imo.
