Dominic Calvert-Lewin watch

And yet for four years on massive wages he didn't turn up and Beto scored more league goals in half a season then Dom managed.

All his performances are making clear now is that it was just simply because he wasn't bothered and clearly felt comfortable coasting.

Akin to people saying sell Lukaku we'll just spread the goals around.

We've signed a lot of strikers the past decade mate and DCL was the 2nd best, and we let him, at 27, walk free.

Shared my view he'd ourscore Beto and Barry this season too, turns out he'll outscore them combined.

I do agree with this, but it's too easy to say "he missed a bunch of chances" or "he didn't care for four years."

It’s obvious that he didn’t feel comfortable playing the target man under us. He constantly said how Carlo got the best out of him, was the way he was played under Carlo. Some of his misses for us were shocking but that’s cos he had to think about it. He’s better instinctively and not having to think about finishing.

Moyes basically wanted him gone in February and had enough of him with the way he was over his contract. It was best for both parties to part because it had become stale and toxic for both sides.

I’ve got no ill feeling towards the lad, but we should of cashed in on him when we had the chance.

Thats over a decades recruitment.

Replacing a striker who is capable of a benchmark of goals evidently isn't easy.

I understand why Moyes/Everton let him go, but personally, as I was vocal - Id have kept him and paid the wage he knew he'd get as a free agent elsewhere.
I'm not going to criticise the club for not offering an extremely high wage to someone with a very poor injury record. Especially when I'm not sure of the player even wanted to stay

I am absolutely going to criticise the club though for the absolutely hopeless recruitment policy that we've had in the last decade.

Continually refusing to prioritise attacking positions only to then this summer spend about 80m on players not good enough to start. Continually refusing to sign decent full backs. A complete refusal to sign any players with pace. And a complete inability to get successive managers a big enough squad to cope with injuries.

Until we sort recruitment we won't do anything. We need new people and new ideas and everyone involved in the past mistakes to be replaced. That includes those involved in suggesting the players last summer.

He rejected the contract mate.

He knew he'd earn £100k+ elsewhere. Everton didn't offer it/rejected his demand.

Up until May, he changed his rep and was talking up staying at Everton. We legged him and his demands. As we did Doucoure.

Behave.

With 8 league goals he's beat what he managed over any of his last four seasons here. Lukaku he most definitely was not.

We didn't let him walk for free. We made him multiple contract offers that he rejected. He CHOSE to walk away from this club after not bothering to perform for most of his last contract here.

He could have outscored Beto last season so if he had been arsed one bit to do so.

We legged a lad who had turned down multiple previous contract offers and then came to us with his begging bowl out in the last month of his contract after not performing for the last four years of his contract.

Let's stop rewriting history.

It did not make sense to hand a lad who's highest league scoring figure was 7 in the past 4 seasons with an over 100k contract when we were just coming out of PSR nightmares.

He was getting long balls lumped up to him constantly. He was about 40 yards from goal with no players around him. What was he meant to do? Wish we could see Haaland have to deal with that cos he’d struggle and have same goal output as DCL.

Majority of our fans don’t understand football, put yourself in that bracket.

so he didn’t score cos he couldn’t be arsed?

Exactly. We would not have been overpaying him in total as his purchase price/amortisation would have been zero. He was probably our cheapest option. But I don’t blame him for wanting a clean break.

On the end of a passing move where every player on the team touched the ball today, as opposed to trying to flick on goal kicks that come down with snow on them. Fair play to him.

To be fair, he missed countless sitters in the last couple of years so that may have continued if he’d stayed. But I thought he always put in the effort, just as Beto does. Was always about the missed chances, and the crap players around him.

He’s moving round the pitch now really well, breaking into sprints rather than looking like he is waiting for something to snap. Regardless of his history with us, that’s great to see.

The answer is in the middle

He definitely wasn't set up for success at Everton but he also missed so many chances last 2 seasons. He was one of the most underperforming players in the league under their expected goals.

Is it not massively obvious as you watch him score more for recently promoted Leeds?

Think of how many relegation battles and PSR problems we could have avoided if he had bothered to do his job for us.

Leeds are playing to his strengths. We did not. Its no coincidence that his best spell at us was under ancelotti.

Theres a sating about confusing malice with incompetence, the incompetence was the clubs play style and consequential lack of supply.

The only maliciousness came from the fanbase, giving him grief online while he had mental health issues, booing him when he was injured.

To be fair Jake, if he wasn't arsed, taking all that into account, I dont blame him.
