Evening folks. I hope people don't mind but I want to post in here regarding training advice for my new Dachshund puppy who I'm trying to train myself. Most things are running smoothly so far, particularly toilet training which he seems to have conquered, but biting/"nipping" is presenting itself as a problem. Is it right to tap his nose when he does it? That's what I've been doing so far to no avail. It's my first dog so be kind, please :D
Need to show dominance from now, so best to welly it all over the living room.
Sincerely
MRCVS Kurt Zouma

ok mate mrs has 3 and they are a stubborn breed!!! but really fun.

hers don’t like any other dogs outside sort of they bark as utter anything anyone and anytime - they adore my baby 🐶 like

when it’s being aggressive place her/him
in another room for 2 mins like a time out

do it and eventually he/she will get the picture - don’t tap the dog on the nose theyl think it’s a game!

anyway my mrs is asking for a picture
so can you send me one!!! 😂

I think this is where I'm going wrong haha.

I'll post a pic later or tomorrow. Watching the game right now ;)

He's a miniature pedigree.

I reward him treats every time he goes to his mat for a wee or poo. One flavour for a wee, one for a poo. I do that so he can differentiate. I thought it was a clever idea. How do I apply the same system for not mouthing/biting? It's not exactly the same sort of system of behaviour.

A bit of both. I say biting, but it's obviously teething related when I think about it. I do have chew toys and I've been trying to give them to him whenever he tries to nip.

It's playful, definitely. Sometimes he growls when he's doing it which I guess could come under the aggressive umbrella?
It's probably teething and the growling sound accompanying it is normal part of the play. Once he is behaving around visitors I wouldn't worry

We've had 5 GSDs since 2000 (sad day today) and all have been brilliant with visitors including my daughter's friends.

One loved jumping with them on the trampoline!!

As pups they will chew all sorts including me but once it is playing and not biting or nipping visitors, it should be controlled easily enough.

The only time my daughter was bitten was we visited friends who had a West Highland Terrier. Nasty little so and so.

Thankfully it didn't put her off dogs and I think we probably had four of our own at the time.

Now married she has a cocky little cocker age 4 and 6 months !

She is here now bossing my 3 year old GSD. 😀

A lot of dogs growl when they're playing. You'll soon figure out if it's aggressive. Training takes time and can be very frustrating. Keep at it and they all get there in the end. Training mine to recall reliably took years, and he still has the odd moment when he does something daft.
