Thanks for the sympathy folks.Sadly Lily, our 11 year old GSD is near the end with a liver tumour. She is lying with her head on my lap, not in any pain, but breathing is shallow and heartbeat irregular.
I'm hoping she'll go off in her sleep. Our vet will give her the injection at home if necessary, saving her the trauma of being loaded into the car.
A lovely dog all her life, never gave us any trouble apart from taking shoes and losing them. I have about 5 single shoes or flip flops
Our other GSD who is 3 will really miss her and my daughter who was with me when we got her as a pup is really upset.
At least Lily is nice and peaceful.
Sorry for your loss, pal. A dog is more than just a pet, they're your mate. RIP Lily.Lily went asleep at lunchtime, very peaceful and is now resting with other pets that have come and gone over the last 31 years in the back of the house - its a big garden thankfully.
Lovely memories of her over the past 11 years
At rest now old friend. Our shoes are safer.
As a marker there is a single shoe on top of one of the sticks that she loved to retrieve. The other shoe has, along with several others, never been found!
Thanks for your support.
Cheers. The 3 year old seems ok about it. Strangely the vet recommended letting her see Lily after the injection and before burial.Sorry for your loss, pal. A dog is more than just a pet, they're your mate. RIP Lily.

What type of Dachshund?Evening folks. I hope people don't mind but I want to post in here regarding training advice for my new Dachshund puppy who I'm trying to train myself. Most things are running smoothly so far, particularly toilet training which he seems to have conquered, but biting/"nipping" is presenting itself as a problem. Is it right to tap his nose when he does it? That's what I've been doing so far to no avail. It's my first dog so be kind, please![]()

Is it playful or aggressive. All pups will use their teeth when they are developing, some more destructive in terms of tearing shoes, clothes etcEvening folks. What type of Dachshund?
If it’s a pedigree, positive reinforcement is the way to go, you should discourage it in a positive way, have plenty of treats and toys at hand to reward good behaviour rather than hitting the dog that will only make it fear you, not respect you. Mixed breed dogs are a different story, and may respond to fighting back if you go the route of play fighting and encouraging them to defend themselves.
Is it mouthing or actual nipping?
Chew toys, withdrawal of attention, and positive reinforcement of desirable behaviour with treats should help with mouthing.
Is it playful or aggressive. All pups will use their teeth when they are developing, some more destructive in terms of tearing shoes, clothes etc
Our 3 year old GSD was always grabbing my hand or leg when young. But playing, not aggressive and of course teething. Same with every other pup I've had over the past 52 years.
If tap on nose not working, a stern AH AHCombined with a clear and stern NO!! should give him the message.
If he's nipping visitors aggressively that is more problematic and you may need to bring him to a professional trainer.
Best of luck with him mate..
