If it wasnt for the U23's Niasse might of slipped through the net, it was only by scoring goals at that level he was able to popcorn Koeman
Yes I remember when we had a under 18 team a A team, plus a B team, and a full blown reserve team that played a identical full league programme called the central league playing home games at Goodison !
Now we have only a youth team an under 18 league and a under 23 team so yes it's essential we have such teams - many players in the reserves came into our first team in the 1960/70s class players a certain Brian Labone, Tommy Wright, Joe Royle , Colin Harvey etc etc etc!
All played for England too! Cost us nothing!
 
U23s is a delicate balance between out-of-favour players spoiling competition, a way to develop young players without loaning out everyone, and to provide some barely competitive games for players to regain/keep match fitness.

Won't touch it unless you know what you are exactly doing.
