Signed one year deal..

Not really happy about it.

Defender Sylvain Distin has signed a one-year contract extension.

The new deal will keep the 36-year-old at Goodison Park until the summer of 2015.

An August 2009 arrival from Portsmouth, the French defender has been a near ever-present during his four-and-a-half seasons on Merseyside, racking up 177 first-team appearances.

Of those, 22 have come during the 2013/14 campaign, while last February he became the first foreign outfield player to reach 400 Premier League outings.

Distin's contract had been due to expire in June.

He becomes the second player this week to pen a new Everton deal after Leighton Baines signed a long-term agreement on Monday.

Hopefully he'll be used sparingly as cover. Makes sense for us, but would he have signed without some assurances about being first choice?

We definitely need to see some new blood introduced into that CB. berth

Excellent player for us in the main, albeit with a few slips here and there. At his age it's worth commenting on how well he's adapted to the change in play under Martinez.

Happy to have him.

Christ, we've had the best defence in the league this season up until last night, and he's been a major part of it, yet some are acting like it's a bad move.

I think it is. I don't think he's been that impressive this season, i think he's become slower, and even slower on the turn. He struggles on the ball and in turn that makes the other players around him nervous, i think he's been a great servant and a good defender over the years but i would be majorly disappointed if he is our starting cb next season.

Don't see how this could be seen as anything but positive. Excellent defensive record in the main this season and Distin is still an unbelievable athlete for someone who is mid thirties.

Got a defender for another year for no money, obviously besides his wage. Let Distin go and we'd have to waste money in agents fees, player fees and transfer fees. Yes he's gonna have to be fazed out but he's an experienced pro with a great attitude and I'm glad he's staying at the club.

I agree that we should be looking to phase him out of the first team, but he still has something to offer. I'd certainly rather us spend money on a striker if it was a choice between that and a CB. This Martins Indi fella seems to have been linked to us a fair bit, so maybe there's something in that.
