Distin & Neville - Contract Extensions

Its not so much that he's cost us goals directly, its more that he is either playing really bad passes, making really bad clearing headers, giving away really crap free kicks or making really slow past it attempts at tracking runners in every game.

Because of the quality elsewhere in the team and the way we are playing we are getting by regardless and surviving those mistake and sitting in 4th.

If Ross Barkley, or Junior, or any other player had been putting in the solo performances that he has this season they'd be slaughtered and banished from the team probably never to be seen again.

But 35 year old Neville gets a contract extension.

Anyone else want to go against the grain with me and say that Neville has put in some decent shifts this season?
When? Hes been shambolic this season and shouldnt be anywhere near our first team. I dont even think Im being cruel when I say he'd struggle to get into a Championship clubs midfield.

Lets face facts here, he isnt in there because we need him to be. He is there because he is one of Moyes' favourites.

Think you're being a bit harsh on Nev, I'd like him to get an extension at a considerable wage cut. Don't think he's fit to start, but he can do a back-up job in the centre or at right back. Not really comparable w Ross Barkley or Junior as neither of them have any senior international football experience.
We do need to strengthen our central mid to put Nev further from the starting 11 though.

Distin I'm fine with a 1-year extension, which would mean we could slowly phase him out. I think Heitinga and Jags should start most games and Duffy be blooded late in a couple of games to get time to settle in. Distin should be back-up for either of Heitinga and Jags as far as possible.

Got to agree with this. Particularly the wage cut bit. He shouldn't be anywhere near our higher earners if he's just going to be a squad player.

I will mate. Nev has not been that bad had some good games and bad games. Given we'v needed someone to come in and cover for gibson's injury and we don't have quality backup for any possistion, it's invietable that who we bring in is going to be weaker. Whether that was an aging Neville or a young inexperienced Jnr both would of made mistakes for different reasons.

I don't believe we'd be any higher or lower with someone else of our current squad playing there. Every weakness or mistake by nev is magnified by the haters so he's always fighting a loosing battle anyway. He's certainly had some good influence on helping Coleman settle but of course that and anything good he's done will be ignored by many.

I'm no Neville superfan and as much as anyone can't wait for Gibson to return which of course will make us stronger. But given our options and being 4th in the league which he has played his part in the guy deserves a break!

As for a 1yr extension I'm not fussed either way. I don't honestly believe he will be playing CM much after January when gibson's back and another signing is made. He will be a true backup squad player and if we qualify for Europe we will need numbers.

He's been in there as the manager thought he was the right choice as Gibson is injured, he's also done a decent job in there for the most part in the last couple of months. The rest of that post is nads imo.
