When I look at the fixtures coming up in September and October, I've got a nagging feeling we're going to be struggling at the end of that time :
3 home games against Liverpool, Newcastle and Man U. Can't see us getting more than 3 or 4 points from that lot.
4 away games against Stoke, Hull, Arsenal and Bolton. Obviously this is where we need to be picking up points. But the Hull game's the only one I feel at all confident about. It sounds as though Osman may well miss the Stoke game, so once again the midfield will have a very makeshift look to it. Castillo will still be jetlagged, and may well start on the bench.
Even the derby game will probably be too soon for several of our injured players.
I fear it will take time, not only for our squad of crocks to regain full fitness, but also for the new players to adjust to the pace of the Premiership and for the likes of Lescott and Jagielka to play themselves back into the form that they showed last season.
Taking all this into account, it's far from inconceivable that by the end of October Everton will still be in the bottom 6 in the Premiership, out of the Carling Cup, and out of UEFA. That's a worst case scenario, and hopefully the team will pull through this difficult autumn through a determined attitude and showing the quality that we have. One thing's certain : unless we can find some form very quickly, we could be in for a long depressing season.
