We actually shouldn’t be relying on our forward players to cover for our defenders. We should bring in midfielders with legs to do this.

Same here, when running through the players likely to be with us next season I usually forget to include him.

Does he need encouragement to try though?
I thought he looked good and worked hard in every game he was in, even dropping deep to get on the ball and try to tackle.

I think the reason he wasn’t played is he’s not very good at defending or running hard, not that he didn’t try, and in the situation we were in we needed 100% commitment or we were screwed. Put some better defenders and CMs behind him and he can have the freedom he needs!
