Defender A Top Priority – News Archive – News – evertonfc.com – The Official Website of Everton Football Club

David Moyes has revealed he is searching hard to bring a new defender to Everton.
The Blues' boss admitted that making additions to his defensive line-up is his top priority ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
And a new centre-half is at the top of his list, with Joseph Yobo and Joleon Lescott currently the only fit central defenders in his senior squad.
“We have got a decent team but we have a concern as we’ve only got two centre-backs at the club just now,” said Moyes.
“That means I am going to have to add a central defender. It’s a priority – we don’t have cover at left-back either.
“Joleon could cover for Leighton Baines but we just don’t have the options to do that at the minute. There is a shortage there as well.
“We don’t have Mikel Arteta fit, nor do we have Yak, Jags or Victor Anichebe and our numbers are dramatically down, so it’s something we need to address.”

Moyes’ side have been making good progress during their pre-season training in America, and following the Club’s recent success he believes that any prospective signings would certainly see a move to Everton as an attractive proposition.
“I’m pretty sure that players will be keen to come here,” Moyes added. “I’m sure they will see a football club that has improved and will go on improving.
“You only have to look at the squad we have got to see that the players have made progress, they are a hard working group and hugely determined.
“The market is quiet at the minute and only Manchester City seem to be buying big but I think that others will start buying before too long.
“We know that we have got to add players. Yes, I would have liked them in before now – but I will definitely be adding to the squad as soon as the right one becomes available.”

I still think we will make a substantial bid for someone of Moutinho/Defour calibre a week before the season starts.

It would make sense. We have some money. £5m for a young right back. A confirmed "pleasing" offer for Defour. We will know what type of bid will be accepted, we've had correspondence with both Sporting and Standard. If we made an acceptable bid now, the selling club and the players agent would do everything they could to invite other offers and I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Villa matched or bettered any offer for the likes of Defour. Or Real Madrid for Moutinho. Maybe if we delay a bid, Real Madrid will be happy with what they already have. A late bid would give us an advantage in that respect.

I am clutching at straws really aren't I?

We also don't have cover in central midfield, on the wings, or at right back. In fact the only place we have any kind of cover is up front and attacking midfield.

Also like to point out that Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all signed 10million plus players already. So it's not really just Manchester City is it David.

So your the one responsible for keeping Goat's hopes up of signing a player contracted to his club until 2014 hey?
