I always thought that when you were on a bad run one of the first things you did was to make yourself difficult to beat. Irrespective of team selection and player performance our tactics should be based on this until we hopefully start to turn things around. The best defensive performance I have seen this season was against Man City. I know they had Walker sent off just before half time, but even before then we didn't look overly troubled. In that game we played 3 at the back and 5 across midfield. We played a deep defence and our midfield 5 were essentially defenders, ball winners and grafters - Baines, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Davies and Holgate. We had Rooney and Calvert-Lewin up front. For the time being I think this is the type of formation we should be going for, particularly away from home. The individual players can be changed around based on performance (e.g. Niasse for Calvert-Lewin, Beningime for Schneiderlin maybe), but we can't go on playing a flat back 4 with the personnel we have at the moment.
