2025/26 David Moyes

Oh i think its clear he's been tasked to get as high up the league as possible.

To do so he's elected to focus on experience, favourites and neglected to develop youngsters or run a meritocracy.
This is totally illogical. So results have improved a lot due to NOT running a meritocracy? How does that work?

And youngsters have to earn a spot like any other player.

It's like the difference between being one of the best players in the world over a season and fluking a major like Emma Raducanu.
I'm not sure she fluked it, luck was on her side with so many big seeds falling unexpectedly or beating themselves, but she still had to come up with the goods. Tennis is littered with youngsters that win a slam early then tail off immediately. Especially in the womens.

You get the occasional outlier, but the trend is clear. The most realistic path to improvement is to prioritise the league.

Nobody is disputing better teams have a better chance of winning trophies, but to say we should only bother our arse with them when we're a top team is ridiculous.

30+ years now without a trophy, every season is a chance to win 2 trophies at least. There's no reason at all why we should be dispiriting to either competition.

Especially so when we aren't in Europe. It's only 6 extra games to win the FA Cup or Carabao which our squad should definitely be able to handle.

Go back a decade, a team outside of the top six has won the FA Cup twice. Do the same thing for the last 10 years of the League Cup and there's only Newcastle and their Saudi Millions last year.

Winning a cup if you aren't a top team is massively difficult.

In the last ten years a non top 6 side has made the final in the FA Cup only 4 times out of twenty possible (2x Crystal Palace, 1 each for Leicester and Watford).

Do the same for the League Cup and of the last 20 finalists and again only 4 times has it been a non top 6 team (2 of which are Newcastle post Saudi takeover... The others are Villa and Southampton).

Just getting to a final is extremely difficult for a club of our size.

While it is disappointing to go out of the cups early the fact that 80% of the finalists in both cups for the past decade are the teams with the most expensive squads isn't a coincidence.

You can very fairly leather him for the Wolves and Sunderland performances but what is the expectation level for the cups really?

People say "a good cup run" but what does that mean? Is quarter finals an acceptable exit point or would some still be on the manager's back for that?

Of course its not a meritocracy.

To suggest it is would be utter madness.
Out of interest, is this based on your opinion of who the manager should be selecting, rather than the manager who sees them every day in training and whose ass is on the line if the team lose?

That sort of meritocracy?

I just don’t think you or any fan knows what goes on behind the scenes, one either trusts the manager or not. That is about it. It’s abundantly clear where people sit on the matter.
