2025/26 David Moyes

Can't disagree in some ways mate, he's clearly got lots of good attributes, although it boils down to what success looks like, and what we think Everton are capable of achieving?

Everton were 4th in terms of league titles when he joined, and had fairly recently won the FA Cup, personally I'd argue four European qualifications and an FA Cup final in 11 years, wasn't that great.

Yes there were times we played some good stuff, but long term success? I've seen nothing to suggest he's capable of that. It's been 30 years without a pot, and he's been in charge for over a third of that time.

1995 to 2002 is still a long time....

No arguing that a trophy is the biggest thing in football to win, but don't forget how bad the 90s were otherwise coming from the 80s. Relegation battle was the majority. We finished 13th on average from 90/91 to 00/01 with 48 points on average, which is about exactly where Everton landed the last 2 seasons. The seasons under Moyes didn't bring a trophy, but 8th and 56 points on average.

The 5 years ban came in the worst moment for Everton and therefore we missed the chance to get international revenue and gain reputation to get another Linekers and so on, that's sure. We clearly missed to jump on the train to make us a financial power in the 90s by being to anxious too conservative and not adapting to the changing market it's a lack of ambition in the end, also had no one like Jack Walker that was willing to spend.

Clearly the biggest issue. Chelsea are where they are today as Abramovic was happy to chuck money at them for no return as it was his toy.

He has done really well this last year. However as has been pointed out elsewhere, he has been at Everton for well over a decade, without actually winning anything. The naysayers have doubts as to whether he can win a cup at Everton, based on that previous decade.

He needs to win something, anything, and soon.
Yea, I'd love him to win something too.
Right now I'm comparing him to our recent past, not 15 years ago, but I would still take Moyes Mk1 over our recent past any day of the week
I'm enjoying looking up the table for a change, winning away for a change

Right now I'm really happy with him, but of course we need to keep pushing upward, a trophy being a priority

He will lose a lot of my goodwill if he rolls out a weakened team for the cup again. That has to be the priority and he should know that.

He's not the Moysiah yet, but neither is he a very naughty boy

The first two or three FA Cup games take the place of league games on the schedule, so there should be no reason to do that unless they drew an absolute minnow like Weston-super-Mare. Carabao Cup is all midweek fixtures until the final, which puts much more strain on the squad.

Which varies depending each season.

i.e. Moyes' best season was 65 points but got 4th; Martinez's best season was 72 points and we got 5th.

The points won is the constant.

Dave … please tell me what benefits you get by achieving a 5th place finish that you don’t get from finishing 4th?

Why is 5th place our best ever prem season when we have finished 4th and had the opportunity to get into the CL ?

Surely CL qualification is better than Europa qualification?

More money…. Attract better players… play better teams , more league placing money …

How is 5th better than 4th?

Hypothetical question dave ….

This season … would you rather finish 4th on 65 points or 5th on 72?

No, but winning a trophy is different.

What's that old saying....first is everything, second is nowhere.

4th and 5th arguments are just differences over winning nothing.

At least with points totals we can gain an idea of the capabilities of a team if built on.

One gains you the opportunity to play in the CL and one doesn’t …

So it’s not as if there isn’t a significant difference between the two …

If second place is nothing then finishing 17th last season would be the same as finishing 2nd right?

If we could get 7- 9 points from the next 5 that would put us in a great position at the halfway point. 30 points would be excellent considering there’s been some patches of rough form and we’ve had Branthwaite and Rohl basically missing the entire season.

Any talk of ‘making sure we stay up’ would surely be gone from Moyes at that point and he could have a good go in the second half of the season with the returning players to try and push for Europe.

I think my general target this season was going to be 55ish points and somewhere around 10th-ish - that felt like a slight stretch given how poor we've been for years and only having one transfer window with any scope to manoeuvre properly, but we are pretty much on track for that and that's probably not bad given the transfer window only really yielded a couple of players who were ready to make an immediate difference plus the fact that we've not been particularly lucky with injuries either.

It's been a bit up and down so far this season, but we aren't alone there. Bizarre opening third or so to the season - we are currently 3 points off a Champions League place and 10 points off the bottom 3. Hard to remember a season where the league was so bunched at this point. I still don't see us finishing much higher than we are currently, but it's been pretty much ok so far with a number of bumps (which were probably to be expected).

If we could get Branthwaite and Rohl back fit for the second half of the season we have a chance of a good finish based on Moyes’s teams generally peaking in second half of the season, favourable fixtures remaining (a lot of the bottom half still to play at home), and most of the other teams in the top half having European commitments.

The target should be to get that first choice back 5 out in January. If they play anything like they have done last two seasons then we’ll have one of the better defences in the league in the run in. If Moyes could then engineer a run like we had when he arrived last season to finish we could suddenly go very well.

A few things need to happen. One of the strikers (or a January arrival) need to start scoring, Branthwaite needs to get fit, everyone else needs to stay fit.

In a season where half the rest of the PL are playing in Europe, and we've been getting a lot of them after they've played away in Europe midweek, we should be well into that top ten.

It's good that we're finally there, but that'll be the basis for approval for the rest of the season; and every time we fall out of it - and we really shouldn't now from this moment on - criticism should be heaped on this manager.

Top ten is low hanging fruit. The PL is dire. We all know this. And we have a quality first team squad that requires strengthening at CF pretty much only this January now that Garner has made RB his own.

I'd accept top ten after 38 games as a minimum. I've said that from the off. But we really should be targeting top 7 and a likely European place.
