2025/26 David Moyes

Just because they are a CL club doesn’t mean a) he has to say we aren’t at their level b) that we can’t beat them.

It is making excuses, just say they were the better team on the night.

Sunderland are a promoted side, they don’t seem to be letting their status relative to others worry them and are in 4th.
Yea I agree, he should be able to say we can beat them, and he probably did before they beat us comprehensively. Not much point saying it after that humbling is there?
Saying they were the better team on the night leads to why were they the better team on the night and one of the reasons is they are playing at a higher level than us for a while now. That's the reality. We were fighting relegation while they were qualifying for the CL and winning a pot.
He's not saying they are a bigger club is the grand scheme of things which I think some people take those comments as meaning.

Well they'll just have to try to align on it, that's what they're paid to do. Well he will most likely, because he will be the one judged and dropped if the improvements don't continue. I personally want the younger, talented investments on lower wage and if that is the club's vision too, then they'll find someone willing to work with those players. All I'm saying is for now, there has been improvement after only one window that saw a lot of changes and that is a good thing. He deserves a few windows and seeing out his contract unless there is a total collapse
I agree it's not the right time to sack him as this season looks like a mid-table non eventful season which considering where we've been is fine in that context. Personally I'd move him on in the summer and use the remaining time of this season to identify a manager who can take us forward using the strategy in place that the club seem to want to implement

It’s just such a stupid comment to say. Half the battle as a modern day manager is keeping the fans onside, and you lose so much favour coming out with that. Clearly they have a lot going for them with the Saudi ownership, but Newcastle were 14th before the game today and hadn’t won away. It’s completely unacceptable to say oh well we can’t really compete in a home game against them.

I agree with you that overall they have a better squad than us.

However they have weaknesses too, they haven’t won away from home in 7 months and had just had a tough European fixture away. West Ham beat them 3-1 at the start of the month. I think Moyes’s praising of them as not in our league was pretty pathetic and unnecessary.

Yea I get it. Nobody wants to hear it, including me. I just wonder what he could've said that would satisfy supporters and the board while at the same time keeping his players heads up. I think most answers he could give would annoy somebody

80m worth of our signings haven't been involved in a goal all season, so whoever was involved in signing them deserves criticism.
The reason we aren't better this season is mostly down to the recruitment. We spent a lot of money to make at best only a minor incremental improvement. Until we start signing the right players and players with pace and quality, then about 14th or 15th is our limit.
