Just wading in on this Moyes v Martinez debate.
I loved Martinez, even when things were going sour, thought he was a fantastic fella and clearly got a good football mind. I hated that he was so stubborn, I think the reason he had to go was because it was consistencies in play that led to us being where we were. Constant mistakes at the back because he wanted ball playing defenders with players who clearly weren't comfortable doing that, diabolical set pieces (people could point to this season but in 2013-16 there were no set-piece coaches sat in every club and not as big a focus as they are in todays game), never ever a plan B, every game the same, and unfortunately as we seem to do - he choked the big occasions e.g. Southampton away, Kiev away, United semi final, City semi final (although the ref helped with that).
Half of me does think, I wonder what would have happened if he got money to spend, the other half thinks that as much as he brought in some brilliant players such as Lukaku, Deulofeu, Barry and dare I say McCarthy before the injuries, he also brought in some right muck such as Cleverley, Alcaraz, and even though he became something of a cult hero to me, Kone.
I think Moyes brings a lot of stability and a lot of frustration with him is due to his longevity with the club. We're in a unique position that only Arsenal, United and now nearly City fans can share in that we've watched the same premier league manager for over a decade and have become familiar with his tendencies. On the whole I find that Moyes can and does play some attractive football at times and I do agree that he was far too conservative in his previous spell both with play and mentality.
I'm really hoping that Moyes, getting nearer to the end of his career and with much more money to play with than he had last time, throws a bit more caution to the wind and just goes for it. He might be surprised by the results.
