One thing I did like him saying today was that we definitely do have money to spend.

Imagine if he came out and just said a load of nonsense platitudes like ‘the market is really difficult’ ‘everyone is working really hard 24/7’ ‘we are doing all we can’ ‘PSR makes things difficult’ etc etc

Instead he’s basically said ‘everybody relax. We have money, we will spend the money. We might not get quite the elite players we wanted but we’re going to improve the squad in the next ten days don’t worry’

But, in the end, trophies are what it's about. You look to incrementally improve to the point where winning trophies becomes likely. Look at Newcastle under Eddie Howe. But the idea that a manager needs 11 years to then win a trophy is for the birds. Moyes, to his credit, didn't need too long at West Ham. Glasner at Palace did it immediately.

None of this should be beyond a properly-functioning Everton.

I didn't want to say this out of politeness because JobfortheMoyes has always been pleasant to me. But it did cross my mind that perhaps the difference between some Moyes fans and those who are more skeptical is that our expectations/demands of the club are different.

I just don't see the Moyes-Kenwright years as anything other than Bill's managed decline being executed to near perfection. Others, understandably, see that era as halcyon given the chaos that followed. It's just that I don't think 2002-2013 versus 2013-2025 is the choice here...

I'd love us to have a manager for 10 years - but only one who wins trophies merits that longevity. The Moyes-Kenwright longevity can be looked on as an indictment of our unseriousness as a football club as anything else.

I’ve not actually heard him speak for years I’d say, and haven’t actually read any quotes. Also I know all managers talk nonsense at these pressers. But reading that he’s said we have to go for lower quality players just makes me doubly impatient until he moves on. Football really is all about the camaraderie of the fans and enjoying those moments where you look back on with nostalgia in the years ahead. For example the Danish Dynamite side of the 80s, they won nothing with regards trophies but they won the heart of football fans all over the globe

There haven't been proper standards at Everton for years. We aimed for 17th place.

I just want a team that fights, is always trying to be competitive and which is trying to raise the levels.

Fact is modern football is purely down to money and we cannot compete as it’s such an uneven playing field. But you can gradually get better and challenge if you are patient, a much undervalued quality nowadays.

For a club our size, it should be a raison d'etre. 95% of the clubs on the planet are small. We are in the top 5%. For the 95%, winning may be unrealistic (not that it stops some of them from trying, or indeed succeeding). For us, our standards should be in line with the top 5% as befits our size. Or else settle for mediocrity.
