I dunno mate. He was a good player. Not sure he would have had the profile or opportunities he had if he looked like Paul Scholes. To be fair to him he was always very professional and played with maximum effort, he got the most out of what talent he had and playing for England particularly meant a lot to him, but i think he was overrated personally.

Paul Scholes was twice the player in my opinion - he was the generational talent for me, criminal the way it played out for him at international level, an awful waste. I think he was England's best player and they never recognised it.
Do you think Alex Ferguson was only playing him for his looks?

Nah i think he sold him because of them and the profile it created.

That kind of highlights my point though. Ferguson would indulge some players and their behavior like Cantona, Rooney and Keane as he knew they were indispensable and had too much influence on results and talismanic to the team - until they were over the hill.

He sold Beckham arguably at his peak. Brought in a young Ronaldo.

I dont think he ever would have sold someone like Paul Scholes, Keane or Rooney in the same career phase.

Im not running him into the ground, he was a good player, but not a great player in my opinion.

Not according to Carlos Queiroz in the documentary. He said that one of the reasons they wanted to get rid was because his performances had been on a downward trajectory over the past few months and he cited Beckham gaining upper body strength for the famous Addidas Gladiator advert as one of the reasons for this decline.

I’ve caught bits of it in the background where my missus has been watching it and it’s just reinforced how much I hate the sport, how your beyond tedious ubiquitous football “personalities” like Neville and Keane will do literally anything to get their faces on telly, how boring David Beckham is and how anybody who worships footballers is a moron.

Long story short, I’ve seen better.

Agreed. He was already pushing 30 and past his best when he left United IMO

Was England's most important player for the 2002 Wolrd Cup - massive shame he was injured going into that tourney...was a fantastic team.

Didn't warrant the Real move, though and that was for shirt and brand sales. Real paid 25m and made 75m on that deal, I think. That Madrid team was insane though.

Found the chasing of the knighthood all unsavoury and not surprised when it all came out with the leaked emails, Unicef, Katherine Jenkins, etc.
