He was offered an extension before Koeman arrived. Prior to his arrival Koeman was asked about it, and he said if a deal was offered, it should be honoured.

I don't recall any of that. Doesn't mean it didn't happen but it would be a strange thing to ask and answer.

We could have easily have got rid if need be. I put zero stock in a manager who never played the bloke offering a new contract and the club having to honour it. It makes zero sense.

Gibson did an interview saying his contract was up and he had a few offers on the table from other clubs, he went on to say that we then offered him a new contract, and once that happened there was never any doubt in his mind that he was going to stay, he actually signed a new contract after Martinez had left.

"The 28-year-old had been out of contract having signed for the Blues in January 2012."

Gibson has been dogged by injury in the past three seasons and managed just 27 appearances for Everton.

But the club, who have yet to finalise a deal to bring Ronald Koeman in as Roberto Martinez’s replacement, have offered the midfielder new terms.

Gibson says he had “options” but his first choice was always to stay with Everton.

“I am absolutely delighted,” he said.

“I had a few options but as long as Everton were giving me the option I was never going anywhere else. People say, ‘Once Everton has touched you,’ and it is true. It is a great club, there are great people here and the dressing room is great, so I was never signing anywhere else"

“Obviously, I have had a tough few years but thankfully the club have stuck by me and I have signed for another two years, so hopefully the next two years go a lot better."
