It nonsense, first option? What does that term even mean in British football?

If everton ever decide to sell up Rodwell, Fellaini or Barkley in the near future then Man Utd will be at the front of the queue regardless.

First refusal means that if the club are forced to sell, or wish to, then United are given the option to proceed with negotiations first. Just because they will be in for them does not mean the player will join them if someone like chelsea or city come in and offer big buck wages. I think it would be more than a gentlemans agreement if it was true, and things like this go on all the time, far worse stuff goes on in football than a club being given first refusal on a player

I think we know what it means, Sylvain's point was in reality, that would be the case regardless of any agreement.

Ravel Morrison is a completely different proposition to Gibson. He's a real talent and has a large value to Utd as he's under 21.

They will want to maximise their income from him, but SAF probably wants rid given the reporting on recent events and how it seems he's effectively washed his hands of him. A tribunal fee wouldn't get United what SAF perceives to be a fair value, so he certainly won't take £500k for him.

Gibson to Sunderland didn't go ahead as he wanted to try to stake a place at United. It became pretty evident that wasn't going to happen due to his minimal appearances through the early part of the season. His disciplinary breach at Christmas/New Year obviously accelerated his exit from which we've benefitted, hugely in my opinion.

Haven't seen anything other than on here that QPR were interested. Assuming that this wasn't more jarg nonsense then perhaps; unlike most footballers, he actually considers who he is going to play for and under, as opposed to who is going to pay him the most money. From that viewpoint, Everton are a far more attractive proposition than QPR under Neil Warnock's stewardship.

Very interesting read on Morrison in the Guardian at the weekend. Given this situation and the reported unrest from Paul Pogba, I'm watching with interest how SAF copes with situations he'd have resolved with the click of his fingers 15-20 years ago. Greedy external parties and the lure of excessive money is ruining this sport.

Anyway, a lot of things go on in business that would send a lot of heads turning. I'm not saying this has happend, but if you think football is a simple transaction with no back hand deals, dodgy tactics or agreements then you have lived a very sheltered life

Again I agree, but the fee that small? No matter if hes got 6months left, 500k is very low. Every player has a certain value especially if he was valued at 6mill a few months prior.

I'm making assumptions as to Gibson's exit salary at United (say circa £20k pw), but I'd imagine £500k would be around the book value of the last six months of Gibson's contract.

That's better than losing him for nothing in the summer. That said, many United fans thought it was cheap as well. Perhaps you can't ignore the respect/friendship between SAF and Moyes. I'm not having any of this 'first option' speculation though. Why? read on...

Ergo, if Rodwell/Barkley/Baines/Felliani (insert boss player name here) has to be sold, then no-one at the club (or the club's financiers) would allow a potential sale where just one potential buyer sets the price.

I dont think they'd set the price, Id think itd be first refusal. Ie we're selling player x because club x is interested, would you be interested.

Drums up the price of player x if United have a refusal on them too as club x will want to make a better offer

Behave.....have I mentioned Saha's transfer?? No, just because Ive mentioned something which I have been told does not mean it is potentially applied to every transfer of every player.

And from what i got told (whether truthful or not) does not mean the club have agreed to sell any player to United, it was first refusal if the club ever agreed to depart with any of the mentioned players; a big difference from saying 'well you give me gibson and you can have one of these in a year or so'. I don;t really see how we are relenquishing control over our players if this is true.

Gibson was out of contract at the end of the season, and thats why I have been told that the club have paid nothing for him upfront. Like i said, this could be a load of tosh, but to deny anything like this ever goes on is very childish.
