Cycling thread

I blame the Russians. Probably had a mobile wind turbine to knock Froome off and now they have managed to grease Thomas's tyres.

*Thinking about it, it could be the Americans or Chinese, or perhaps Lance Armstrong is looking to be a team boss and is picking off the competition one by one.

Bernal before the Giro, Froome and Thomas before the Tour. I know crashes happen, but they seem to have more than most.

Might have been discussed already, sorry if so...

What's everyones thoughts on these Bontrager Wavecel helmets? My local bike stores are selling out of them weekly atm, and the marketing/stats are seriously persuasive, but the other side of the argument seems to be the crash test stats are exagerated. Is this just the current standard (MIPS) protecting their own interests or do they have some foundation?

With Dumoulin out of the Tour it really is looking threadbare. Bernal has looked good in Switzerland but he has pretty meagre competition there. No one really did much in the Dauphine.
All aboard the Thibaut Pinot love train

PS: Did I mention I'm going to the final 2 Alp stages. You might hear more about that...

What is the premise here graeme - is it new tech is much more protective of your head, or new tech is very light and still protects your head?
If it's the first I'd say that's basically bollox as the chances of hitting your bonce when riding are so extremely low in the first place, that arguing some new solution for head protection is meaningless [I crashed in a time trial the other month and properly hit my head - first time I've had a helmet justify itself in 30 years on the road, and even off road where you crash a lot more I've had very few head-bangers in that time].

OTOH if it's very light then that's something I'd take seriously - helmet that will work in a crash but you hardly know you're wearing it would be pretty good.

Still fairly new to cycling and have a couple questions any of you more informed fans might be able to help me with.

From what I've seen julian alaphilippe can consistently smash the mountain stages, so why isn't he considered a GC rider?

How good are the Yates brothers, could they go on to become similar to the Schlecks?

To mix it in GC you need to be an exceptional climber, a strong time trialer, and have a deep, talented team who want to win a GT. Plus you need the gnarly hardness to ride 3 weeks without having a proper bad day.

Alaphilippe is a beast of a rider - one of the best bike racers in the world and he must have an eye on GC. His team runs the show in the Classics but aren't generally a GT outfit so that is one big issue for him - Quickstep are built to win the Spring classics, not go all in for the Tour like Ineos, say. I also don't know what his time trialling is like - it's prob decent. SO it could be on the cards for him, aside from anything else he rides with panache - it looks like he has the mentality to boss the peloton.

So for the first time since 2007 Cav wont be lining up on the start line of the TDF. I for one will miss the anticipation of what he might do.
Sad to see he didn't make it as it sounded like he was training hard for it.
Hard to keep mixing it at the front end of a GT sprint into your mid-30s - some sprinters can adapt their style to more of a puncheur as they get older and get wins like that, but Cav is a purist.

He's been way off the pace though this year, and even as DD increasingly look like a cycling tribute act, he's perhaps difficult to include even on past performances.
