Cycling thread

Meanwhile this absolute cretin, with no front brakes who killed a woman, still doesn't get that he was in the wrong. Quick recap, bikes in the U.K. without a front brake are illegal. The police should crush any found on our roads......

You have to be quite stupid to drive such a bike on the road, especially in a major city with lots of traffic.

Still such bikes aren't really part of cycling culture - unless you drive on track (brakes are dangerous there etc...). It's something that hipsters adopted for some reason that I don't understand, maybe they think it looks nice or something idk.

Summary: blame hipsters not cyclists.

You bring wisdom to this site, Pete, but lets be honest - you've not ridden a bike since 1952. So let me tell you what happened in this sad case - a pedestrian on her phone stepped out into the path of a cyclist riding a track bike. He wasn't going particularly fast, but lack of a front brake certainly increased his stopping distance, and they collided. 99 times out of 100 this would have resulted in just a bruised aris for both of them, but tragically the woman hit her head and subsequently died.
According to the 12 people who saw the CCTV of the accident in court, the track bike was not clearly a factor in the collision, hence him being found not guilty of the main charge of manslaughter. He was found guilty of furious driving, because his bike was illegal and someone died. Normally this would result in a small fine, but the boy's lack of character after the incident will probably see him receive a custodial.

So he is a cretin, and will pay the price for riding fixed with no brake, but he didn't cause this accident - it was just a tragically unlucky collision.

The bellpieces who ride fixed with no front brakes on 60 gear inches aren't part of cycling culture, agreed, but fixed gear itself is fundamental to serious cycling on the road. Ridden at time trials (particularly hill climbs) every week up and down the country by competitive cyclists, used for cadence and pedal stroke training in the winter, and just ridden for fun on the commute as it's a great way to roll.
Obviously I'm talking about grown-ups here, so there's always a front brake.

If it was my wife, daughter, grand-daughter, sister, niece, random female relative I might not agree.

Yes mate I recognize the use of it in an (amateur)sport context.

It's good if you put a front-break on it, I've got no issues then (even though it's still not the same breaking wise). I was talking about all the hipsters that use it (they use it to differentiate themselves or whatever). They refuse to put any form of break on it (illegal), and genuinely they are just a nuisance to everyone. Luckily now they are on the receiving end of high fines.

Side note: Even so I find bicycles in crowded city centres quite hazardous. The entire centre of my town doesn't allow cars any more (unless you live there). Now there are also streets where bicycles are no longer allowed, because they were a danger for pedestrians (every student has a bike and for some reason they don't think it's a good idea to drive slowly in a crowded street and there were quite a bit of collisions). They should be restricted to the cycling highways in crowded cities. Even though it's better than to get run over by a car; it still hurts.

Froome attacked in the red jersey again. Got to hand it to him. The other contenders aren't able to match him.
Have to think he really wants this - he's missed it twice by narrow margins, and he'll prob never again be as dominant as he is now. Of course who knows what Froome thinks or even if he's capable of feelings, but he's well in charge here. As bigringriding once put it - Ok lads, I read the news and the main story is you're all [Poor language removed] slow and I'm the Boss.

Saw Barguil had been sent home for disobeying team orders !?? What happened there? Sounds like the sort of Tedishness you hear from Formula 1.
