Growth hormone. He wanted to continue cycling, even though he's already 39. Early retirement now.

Don't give up hope. Horner won the Vuelta aged 41 (quite certain he got help though; unremarkable rider in all the previous years, wins a GT aged 41).

Aru and Bardet lost 30 seconds on Froome already. Nibali 22 back and the Orica guys 8 back. Poor from Ag2r and Astana on such a relatively short stage. How can you lose 30 seconds in a 16 minute ride?

Teams not suited for the endeavor. AG2R hasn't got a decent TT'er in the whole selection and their execution was also extremely bleak. Leaving big gaps etc. With a lot of goodwill I can see two of them who are semi decent at a TT Houle and Gougeard. On top of that if there are crosswinds tomorrow they will get destroyed.

Astana should have done better with the riders they had.

They are all lucky that Stannard is horrible this year.

Forgotten about him tbf. Still AG2R is horrible in everything that remotely involves TT.

I mainly want to see Zakarin, to see if he can confirm his progress, even though his style of cycling is utterly atrocious (he moves all over the place).

Excellent Nibali and Chavez took back some time on Froome. Others like Contador and Bardet lost some.

Bardet doesn't seem on it at all. 40 seconds lost to Froome in two relatively benign stages is poor, and with a long TT later in the race he'll have a huge job to do in the mountains. Same happened in the Tour, losing time when he shouldn't really have done so.
