I can't decide if it is shirt sighted or sinister, I suppose it could be both
There's an stigma about the humanities. Politicians, teachers and parents who push the narrative that a degree in the humanities is basically financial suicide.

I'm not exactly sure why development of creativity, critical thinking, empathy are considered lesser qualities in the workplace.

I suspect it follows the same logic that you can't be working if you're not in an office.

It's not just Eng. Lit., it's all the humanities. The country is fast becoming a country of ignoramuses.
I think this is a very good point :

Being ignorant is not a by product of modules or areas of study, and a if the faculty are worth their salt they should be embedding critical thinking as a part of the process.

There are plenty of examples of success of humanities alumni.

It isn't just the workplace, it is in the home (or whats left of it) first. The focus on the core subjects, (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) "little Johnny is going to be a Dr don't you know". Expectation. Schooling and 'religious persuasion' instill conformism. Individuality, confidence, and the right to choose interest is harassed and bullied out of children. Things are changing thankfully but the pace of change is slow. When the levers of power are consigned to history it will be upon us all not to let 'them' or anything similar into the driving seat utilizing fear, pain and threat to divide and rule.

Tomorrow is a new day, and the tyrants and their murderers aren't welcome.

Agreed. My point was addressing the assumption of 'financial suicide' that's often made.

Not sure how a class room really operates these days and this is 11 years old but still resonates I think.

Sir Ken's brother played for us a few times in the 70s. Brilliant speaker, for a frustrated drama teacher.

No serious university can fail to offer an English Lit degree, but Sheffield Hallam isn't that serious let's face it. Place like that has to be selective, they cannot teach everything (no university does).
