Not so long ago was a route I was wanting to take. Still regret it slightly. Often think parts of academia (especially in social sciences) can have a bit of an ivory tower feel about it.
Yeah I get what you mean. Seems like a good quality of life kinda job for the most part. I was never that level of achiever where it was especially viable for me, but it's probably one of the least ivory tower ivory towers you can get into, if that makes any kind of sense at all.

There's a surprising number of intellectual idiots out there.

An old friend has a Doctorate in material science but believes all kinds of whacko right wing conspiracies since hes moved to the US. Like Joe Biden runs a paedophile ring. Also thinks Trump is great. Has an unfortunate habit of dismissing any rebuttal of loony points by claiming he's a scientist so knows better.

I feel like I've lost him actually. God knows what happened :(

A sad case or mistaking credentialism for critical thinking on his part.

You know a lot of academics? I’ve got a fair few mates working in different subject areas. Some a bit mad but generally very nice people.

Quite a bit of ascertainment bias going on I suspect, just like in acting or politics...the ones making the most annoying racket are the ones that get the most notice thereby bringing the entire field into disrepute. Certainly, academics are subject to egocentrism, but I don't think it is more than any other fields/professions (think of all the egos in sports, theater, politics, medicine, etc.); it's probably more that academics deal in the currency of knowledge (in the same way that musicians deal in the currency of music, and actors deal in the currency of believability) and once a little bit of notoriety is achieved, it leads (some) academics to boldly proclaim their knowledge in everything (despite, in actuality, only having expertise in a given topic). This happened to JP, who thinks he is an expert on western culture, human nature, and religion, despite being a fairly average clinical psychologist.

No one would have heard of him 30 or 40yrs ago, bar a few on his field. The internet has much to answer for.

I honestly don't think braverman should be in the political threads, the gammon tunes she has been playing belong in here.
I listened to a bit of Nick Ferrari this morning waiting for starmer to come on , if you need an illustration of your point you should listen to the last 30 mins of his show from 08.30-9 as he discusses and argues with callers correcting them how she was totally right on sex offending , grooming and ethnicity and it wasn’t red meat to racists and how various surveys and facts that are at odds with his opinions “don’t feel right “. If you do listen though it might cost you money as you’ll probably need to put the water on for a shower.

I perfect illustration of what she’s saying and why.

The country is a mess , a fortune to do your monthly shop or fill a bath but they know exactly what to highlight.

To be clear sex offences are absolutely a real issue but it’s clear exactly why they’re doing it .

Oh the false indignation of the right when it comes to preventing crime, human trafficking or protecting kids is utterly repulsive. They know emotive false culture wars are where any hope for success lies, as the content of how they actually led the country cannot be defended.

While the polls say what they say starmer will play the game, but I'm extremely concerned at the long term damage that could do by legitimising populist right wing talking points.

My energy bill was more than my mortgage in February. The population en masse will have less money than ever due to the free market deregulated philosophies that are being allowed to run rampant in the UK, and the big talking point is whether we should treat vulnerable minority communities like humans or not.

Small boats is our build a wall , the trans issue is the same both sides of the Atlantic and this one feels like our abortion debate .

The state of the economy and the way they distract is just mind blowing. On this Ferrari show heard a vox pop from Hartlepool talking about the main issue . Loads were saying immigration , a quick google says about 300 asylum seekers there . Crazy

Anyone casting a vote solely based on immigration should be lobotomised
