Cricket

Wonderful and baffling in equal measure.

Goes to show how important a variable good leadership/confidence is in elite sport - seemingly ordinary players are just good ones out of form.

Root and Bairstow are clearly in pinnacle mode, but I think Alex Lees and Mathew Potts have been the standout players for me in the last 4 tests. Future is suddenly very bright for English cricket and perhaps global test match cricket in general

It's been a quite incredible turnaround, perhaps none more so than in the form Bairstow is showing. He's scored 6 centuries this year, which is as many as he'd scored in the previous 9 years combined. Add that to the incredible form Root has shown over the past 18 months and the batting has had a real chance.
What incredible timing as Anderson is about to retire and Broad has a couple of years left with no partner in crime. Everton that.

I think a lot of it is down to taking away the ambiguity of the batsmen.

Go out and bat seems to be an effective message.

They've even managed to get some kind of tune out of the openers. It will be interesting to see if they adopt a similar approach away from home. It seems unsustainable that we keep churning out big 4th innings scores to win games, thrilling though it is.

I was fortunate enough to have a freebie for today and it was great to be able to see someone like Root bat because of that and then have Bairstow backing him up with the form he's been in over this summer. It was magnificent viewing, especially the reverse scoop for 6 that Root pulled off. It's one thing seeing it on the tele, but seeing it in the flesh was something else, more so being sat at third man!

Was it you who wore the ball from Root's scoop? Whoever it was, it looked painful.
