England continue to show why they're ranked number one in the world at ODI cricket, they are really on an extraordinary run of successful series victories both at home and away from home.
Root facing the leg spinner for long periods in both the last two ODI's while making centuries augers well for England's test captain. Cook too is in fine form with a big century for the Lions.
The longer the format the longer for home conditions to favour the home side, which makes the forthcoming test series one that is likely to repeat the last few times India have toured here, and a comfortable home win is perhaps in prospect once again.
India like so many test sides these days, have a history of struggling to compete in away test matches, in their case against any decent side outside of the subcontinent.
They are often near or at the top of the test rankings precisely because they play such a high percentage of their total test matches either at home or on the subcontinent. In fact on their last two series here they've come as the top or near top ranked country only to be on the wrong end of it.
England should once again be strong enough to beat them comfortably in a home series although in this exceptionally hot summer the pitches may well offer the prospect of a more even battle.
To my mind It really does show how well Pakistan have done considering they play even their home tests 'away' as well as drawing their last two series over here and how well South Africa have done recently too.
As to the vc, i'm slightly more to the Australian school of thought of picking your best eleven first and then choosing the captain. In the current situation Jos Buttler would be my choice although without necessarily making him any sort of captain in waiting.
A few interesting questions regarding the spinners, Moeen Ali, Dom Bess or Jack Leach, Abdul Rashid doesn't play tests.
