The wicket isn't really good enough for a fair contest, but England have been completely outplayed. The team selection just hasn't been right and they need to start picking the best team.
Why are they ‘resting’ players? The short series in Sri Lanka was nearly 5 months after their previous Test. I feel for Ben Foakes, he’s proved he’s a top class Test keeper and a very capable no.7 batsman, but Buttler’s improvement behind the stumps means his chances will be limited, unless Buttler’s batting drops of a cliff.

Umpiring is extremely questionable here, off field umpiring and video technology is dodgy AF aswell.
The same umpire has made the only two obvious blunders in this match. How he could rule that Rohit played a shot there is laughable, even the Indian commentators agreed he was 100% wrong.

In the first innings though, he wasn’t helped by the ineptitude of the 3rd umpire in not viewing the whole of the action when that gloved catch was ruled not out. Edit: that gloved catch was not even viewed

So after a difficult day, some positives.

I like the look of Foakes as a wicket keeper batsman at 7. When you consider Buttler averages 51 at 6 and Stokes 49 at 5 there is a good case, that longer term that should be Englands preference. How much more woud England get out of the Buttler if he was just a batsman? Hard to say, but Foakes has been really impressive.

What you do with Pope them becoems a challenge. Ideally he looks a number 3, but it's a question of whether he is ready to bat up there. Lawrence at present looks a bit off test level, but will need time. For me Crawley plays as an opener, next to 1 of Sibley/Bairstow (my preference is Bairstow).

The other is that Alli, and particularly Leach bowled very nicely, and really controlled the rate at the end there.I think Leach may have pushed himself into number 1 spinner territory. I would love Alli to get into some form with the bat too, as he's a real match winner when he does that.

Nick Hoult sums it up well for me

'Kohli’s demands for a turning pitch have been exceeded with India poised for a huge victory to level the series 1-1.

Kohli was so upset with the surface for the first Test that the BCCI’s pitch overseer was shunted aside and the Indian management instead took a greater role in supervising preparations for this match.

The result is a poor pitch which made winning the toss so crucial. Kohli would be a terrible poker player but he likes a gamble. India stacked their hopes on him calling correctly and batting first when the pitch was at its most stable and it paid off.'

Brilliant to see Burns go past 10 for the second time in his last eight innings. A real return to his imperious best.

I was thinking of him earlier. He's done. He has played 23 matches now and is averaging 30.

I remember saying at te strat of the Pakistan series, against competent (out even outstanding) attacks Burns or Sibley getting past 50. I am going to exclude Sri Lanka, as at this level, they are not a good attack, him and Sibley have played 8 innings and made 1 score of over 36 in that time. The 50 Sibley made in Sri Lanka came off the back of being out 3 times but getting an umpires call each time.

The 87 was in a lot of ways a fantastic effort. He batted for nearly 300 balls and batted all day. Yet he only managed 87. How much more often is he going to bat for 300 balls?

For some context, Joe Root batted for 400 balls and scored 254, 226 and 218, scored 228 off 318 balls, 200 off 298 balls 190 off 234, a 186 off 300 and a 182 off 240. I am not cherry picking, they are just his biggest scores listed with balls faced. If you get to 300 balls you really need to be either at 200+ or making a substantial hundred. He did the same in the summer, batted for 372 balls and scored 120. As a test player, as you get more and more fatigued and tired, you need those scores to be big scores, especially when you get out early a lot.

As for Burns he just doesn't have that innings in him.

If England are brave and want to get better, both need to be cut. It's harsher on Sibley, but both aren't good enough. They look what they are, which is decent county pro's doing all they can to compete in a level that is too high for them.

Obviously the game is lost but it's still important that England battle it out tomorrow. Lawrence in particular has a lot to play for with Crawley and Bairstow available for the 3rd test. Don't think 50 will be enough to save him - he needs more. Pope could also do with some runs under his belt while the more they get to see of Patel bowling the better. Same, possibly with Yadav, although the 3rd test is a day-night game with a pink ball - the only other in India was in 2019 when they easily beat Bangladesh at Kolkata, the only test in India when all 20 wickets they took fell to seam. Both teams will therefore consider going in with an extra seamer, but it will depend on the pitch - India won't want to give Anderson and Archer (if fit) any advantage, and they know their spinners, or certainly Ashwin, are different class to Englands.

Crawley will probably open - I don't see Bairstow as an opener (certainly not long term); I'm a big fan and I know he's been working on his technique but anyone who has been bowled almost 30% of his dismissals just isn't tight enough to open. He'll probably bat at 3, again too high but it's the only place open to him at the moment. Good to see Moeen bowl fewer rank bad balls today, though still too many for an off-spinner, and getting Kohli twice in the game should boost his confidence.

I'm sure that when the tour began England would have been delighted to be going to Ahmedabad with the series all square, and that this could be the game that gives them the best chance of winning, given a reasonably fair pitch.
