Cricket

Scored very quickly when you'd have imagined it would have been a slow and watchful morning.

Why are no other teams playing? I haven't heard of any other tests or odi's on going except when England are paying.

Coronavirus is the main problem for the near and mid term, no certainty on any future test series, although the Caribbean league T20 is taking place.

These international players are in a bubble, being tested regularly etc., so sharing the changing room is ok.
But how on earth club cricket is underway I’ve no idea, 22 players going their separate ways after the game. Dangerous. What are they doing, changing in the car park? Just doesn’t seem worth the risk, as they must be high fiving etc when wickets are taken.

Huge fan of Pope but that is an absolutely diabolical dismissal.

He looks a quality player, but something about Englands coaching worries me a bit. I think there's a bit of a mental block, in the same way I sense there is with Everton at times. Rather than being positive, trusting your technique and approaching games wity a mental attitude of what you intend to do to the bowler, rather than what you allow him to do to you, we almost seem to weigh down batsman with this desire to be solid and stoic.

I've been banging the Crawley drum for some time, and I really hope that isn't knocked out of him. I saw it a lot with Peiterson as well, the constant criticism of him whenever he got out because he could have scored more, rather than acknowledging the good he did.

I worry about Pope a bit, as it seems a shot of a guy who's overthinking the game, rather than just trying to score runs. The game is simple really, try and hit the ball for runs, as often and as many as you can. You will eventually get out, so try to get as many as you can before that. We seem to obsess over the not getting out thing, which I do think runs counter intuitively to what top batsman will do.

Yeah you may well be on to something there.

In general I think we over coach kids/players. If you are trying to bat with 100 things in your head, you've got no chance. Players are most confident when they get into a groove, and keep it simple. I'm not in favour of not coaching, but it should start for me with how you can score runs, not how you avoid getting out.

It's like the old golfing adage, if you look at the water off the tea, where's the ball going?

one thing I'll add with Crawley is he's played a number of terrific shots to fielders, or they've just rolled up short on a slower outfield. On a quick, sub continent or Australi outfield I think he'd probabaly have 10-15% more runs and be around the mid to high 90's.

He has hit a number of technically perfect shots to fielders too. If he can work at missing them and placement a bit more, again there is another 15-20 runs for him out there.

Long story short, with a bit of work on placement and a faster outfield he could already be 110-115 off 140 balls and a very good innings would look even better. I don't want to jinx him but he looks like he's got the x factor to me. Reminds me a lot of Trescothick when he came throuugh.
