Cricket

3 and a half hours to avoid losing 19 wickets. All set up for a tremendous finish.

Tbh I couldn't understand the hand wringing yesterday about calling it off early, (and today about why so long?) it's just a few hours of pointless cricket possibly missed - hardly a big deal. There was no urgency as no paying spectators and both sides have long given up on any result.

All too predictably, Lancs in trouble. Jennings continued his dreadful form of the last 18 months when he edged Chappell to Hameed for an unconvincing 10 - amazing to think England selected him for a winter tour. Davies caught behind off a good ball by Trego for a flashy 26, and now Bohannon slightly freakishly caught and bowled by Chappell for 1 - great work by the big bowler. 39-3, Livingstone and Vilas at the wicket.

All pointless granted, but we've seen enough of Kettleborough over these two series to now put him in the not good enough category alongside the hapless Illingworth. Michael Gough, a very good umpire, looks possibly the best umpire that's ever lived when partnering one of these clowns..

With Crawley's wicket, Trigger finger Kettleborough was saved by umpire's call for the 999th time. Even when his decisions stand and aren't overturned, it's just clipping the bails or dodgy on line, the amount of times umpire's call gets him out of jail is unreal, most of the rest it's just proven to be absolutely wrong.

He's the original trigger finger and doesn't give himself time to think. An umpire shouldn't be giving so many marginal calls as out, the technology isn't even perfect - if an umpire is relying on it, he's poor.

Crawley standing outside his crease making it even harder to judge height was absolutely livid, which is pretty understandable when you've taken the necessary steps to make sure height is always an issue for lbw. (Except when Kettleborough is adjudicating that is)

Another poor performance again from Lancashire's top order - 63-4. Yet again needing Vilas and Croft to rescue them.
Finished on 129 - 6 with only Croft showing the application necessary. All too predictable after chasing leather for 120 overs, so I chose to watch what proved to be an engrossing and hard fought day's cricket at Hove where Sussex finished on 57-2, losing a wicket to the last ball of the day, a lead of 111 over Essex, who were earlier bowled out for 140 with young left arm pace bowler George Garton taking 5 - 26. 18 year old Crocombe also bowled a fine opening spell of 6 overs for six runs and one wicket. Both are players to keep an eye on - they are in good hands with Gillespie as coach.

There are real fears that they'll have to use the same wicket for the third and final test starting on Friday which would make it a win the toss win the match game with effectively everything decided on the toss of a coin. The wicket only had 130 odd overs on it but it will wear badly considering it's already lively enough.

Preparation of the proposed wicket, two strips away from that used in the bad light test, has been severely hampered with the freakish weather in Southampton. Normally the next test would be at another ground but this summer the unique circumstances mean it's here again. The groundsman hasn't been able to get it hard enough or do much work on it and with more wet weather today and tomorrow, a decision will have to be made on whether it's practical to even continue their efforts.

Joe has a one hundred percent record at the toss this summer, he's lost every one and England have only won one toss from the last seven or eight in all formats. It's possibly a 50/50 chance then and Root needs to improve his luck or be really up against it.

The saying goes that a good captain is often a lucky captain too, Joe would happily settle for the lucky bit of that atm.

lol
