Thought there was going to be some great news today, especially given our nursery have announced a second price increase this year... But no, it wasn't to be.

The 30 free hours for two year olds is not happening until April 2024... Talk about getting our hopes up that we might finally be getting a bit of a break in terms of outgoings... Why announce it in March 2023 if it's not being implemented until the following April?? Custards.

Carry on as we were then... Although actually a bit worse now.

You must have missed the " tax breaks for the rich" but then mate, for the rich people's benefit, Truss with stealth or so he thinks.... Great news for you Pete ?

They couldn’t implement it immediately as there simply isn’t the amount of childcare places available to fulfill the additional demand. It had to also be announced ahead of time to allow nurseries to prepare. If they had offered 30 hours immediately to all over 9 months it would have been chaos.

It’s a very good announcement, will save hundreds of thousands of people thousands per year in the first two years of their children’s lives.
Was listening to a nursery owner on the radio today… the government subsidy equates to around £4.60 an hour…. Most nurseries offer care commencing at £7.00 per hour …. The sums just don’t add up and nurseries are going to take a substantial hit on this.

The full detail hasn’t been shared so you can’t know that yet. Increasing the ratio of staff to children from 4:1 to 5:1 will make a noticeable difference already.

The ratio is already 1:5 in Germany and much higher in some other European nations like Finland and France.

They must have ways of making it work for them.

When our eldest got his 30 free hours when he turned three, his nursery classed a day as ten hours even though he was only actually in for seven hours. So of the 30 hours the nursery were getting funded for each week, they were only using 21 hours.

Much of the Nursery trade is scornful of the plans in particular funding, the child and child care worker is going to be optional ratio. Also there is no mention of space each child has, depending on age this space is regulated is for wellbeing purposes. No workforce plan in a sector which cannot maintain staff. Who goes to University for sheds loads of debt to earn £17.000 as assistant manager to £32.000 as manager no wonder they cannot staff it.

I think the sentiment is good and is something all parties should be aiming to do…. But I don’t think it’s been well thought out enough.

It’s been fully thought through. Promise loads of jam tomorrow, bank the credit now and leave the practical implementation and funding to others.

They will be out of office by the time people realise it doesn’t work. If by some miracle they are re-elected, “teething problems” due to Covid, Ukraine war, lefty lawyers, remainiacs, Gary Lineker, illegal immigrants and the anti-growth coalition.

30 quid a month for 8-6 care for the little ones Monday to Friday
