Perhaps not coincidentally, the CDC rollbacks of masking guidelines in a large number of areas (generally the ones with high vaccination rates) are unfolding against the backdrop in Ukraine.

A cynic might argue that this is taking place now because it keeps the Republicans from crowing about a win and mutes any dissension from the leftward-leaning elements in the Democratic Party.

Flu and covid virus are transmitted and spread by the same mechanism.
so if one comes back so does the other.
I do expect however that a great many more folk are currently vaccinated against covid as against the flu so you may well be right.

You could argue that now it's not on the news every single day with every single speculation, guess or prediction , many more people have got on with their lives.

Manipulation of population via media. The minute it's gone from the news , even this thread goes extremely quiet.

Which in turn would make the removing of restrictions more suspicious given that it then directed peoples attention away from the prime minister , who despite being days away from being ousted, is still very much in a job.

Says more about us as a population that we can be so easily distracted.
