Little Covid story for you. Working on a boat in Costa Rica and we had 3 positive cases, the skipper got them off straight away but we had a few more cases. After this we followed port state regs and went into a 10 day lockdown with daily updates to port medical personal and our own management company. The captain was excellent and didn't call anyone a mushroom, tory or attempt to fire any engineers for not changing the volitile regulator. All port state regs were followed and the captain made sure nobody felt at fault. There is a company vaccine mandate and we are all fully vaccinated, if you rejoin the vessel having been home to a nation with an available booster you will be expected to get it. There have been vaccine mandates in the shipping industry for years and it has never once been an issue until liberterian toads like rogan, rubin, toby young and any other mutant who saw an opportunity to make money at the expense of peoples health.

Out of 24 crew 13 tested positive during the outbreak, myself and the rest stayed negitive despite having worked hand in hand with crew who did test positive. No one required medical attention or got particularly ill beyond a few coughs, aches and tiredness (bear in mind we have a few bloaters among the crew). A testament to the vaccines and the mandate fully vindicated, keeping everyone safe.

Reports that they might take away the mask mandate on the 26th January. I'm not a massive fan of wearing a mask but it seems logical to keep the masks until at least mid February so that we can get past the worst of winter? Cases are still very high too.

You’re probably right, but how many people are really wearing masks because they’re “forced” to do so, and how many are just doing it because it’s the sensible thing to do? People just seem to be doing whatever they want at this point, so I’m not sure how much having/not having a mandate is going to affect behavior.

Mask compliance still seems to be really high in shops around London, but elsewhere I’ve noticed it to be far less so. I popped into the Morrison’s across from Norwich’s ground before the match Saturday, and it seemed like half the store was maskless.

You're right I think that most people have made a decision. Generally where I live you still see a lot less masks at this point than all other previous waves.

I do think some people wear them because the government ask them to though, if that is removed less people will wear them. Some still will and the numbers might be quite high depending on the city you are in but generally there will be a reduction.

To what extent do masks even work anymore?

Everyone has been catching and spreading covid for weeks with a mask mandate in place. So to some extent, perhaps masks are becoming powerless against covid. If it's going to spread it's going to spread , seeing as though we have the numbers to see cases significantly increase anyway.

What exactly has masks stopped? We have had 10 times as many cases give or take a day!

I only wear masks to make others feel better - on cold days I can see my breath escaping it so I haven't got much faith on it actually helping. I'll continue to wear them indefinitely i think because I know it makes others feel safe. Not my problem if that's a false sense of security.

Happy to see the vaccine passports (potentially) gone though

There is a grocery store in Arizona that has a sign out front which simultaneously says that masks are mandatory, and that they are not mandatory but merely strongly encouraged.

We have reached the point where people have removed the particle from their brains that rejects illogic, which Douglas Adams defined as common sense. It is worth noting that my mother walked right past that sign multiple times a week without noticing, and that she is relatively sensible as human beings go.

Mandatory has always been nonsense anyway. I was on the Thames Clipper yesterday and they clearly state on both their website and the pier/boat that masks are mandatory at all times, and yet the boat was absolutely full of people without one who will have walked past staff to board the vessel without a mask on. The only policing of these "mandatory" requirements is via your own conscience.

If the people operating the boat could pitch the non-compliant over the side, that would get sorted in a hurry.

Let's be direct - the only reason the non-compliant are getting away with it is because the law protects them. Flip that script, and mandatory becomes mandatory.

The problem is coming to agreement about where the power of the state ends and individual rights begin. This is particularly thorny when we start talking about public health in a pandemic, as permitting the state to play the strong role that we might prefer under the circumstances sets them up to infringe on liberties in other areas where we would prefer to be left alone.

24 crew, must be a small GT.

Not working with an unlimited ticket obviously. Jarg seaman.

It doesn't take much. When I went on the ferry to the isle of wight to visit family last year there was a guy going round enforcing not only the wearing of masks but wearing of them properly. No one kicked up a stink and everyone masked up. It need not be hard, especially as these places are essentially private property so the operators can enforce what they want. You wouldn't be allowed into a restaurant without a shirt on, and businesses have a long history of requiring certain things before people can frequent them.

Serbia appear to my mind to be the Millwall of the worlds countries - not a lot to like about them/it at all. Happy to be enlightened by others that know more about this country.
Serbia is a great country. Belgrade is beautiful. Much more classy then Paris and Rome in recent years. It is also my preference to visit Budapest too rather than other mainstream capitals.. The men of Serbia are very stubborn and strong willed.

Their country was occupied for over 500 years, their is kinda like a siege mentality of their people and it is highly a militarized population. It is the most right wing country on earth. Not for everyones taste.
