Only half of people in UK with Covid ever get tested, says scientific adviser, who predicts 'huge wave of infection'

A UK government scientific adviser has said that only around half of people who have Covid ever get tested and predicted that Omicron would lead to “a huge wave of infection”.
Prof Andrew Hayward, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), told BBC Breakfast: “Only about half or maybe even fewer of people who do have Covid ever get tested.”
He said the doubling rate of new variant Omicron would lead to an “extraordinary number of cases” and “a huge wave of infection”.
He added:

He said that by Christmas or new year there should be more data about the severity of the new variant, but said that by then it would be too late to take action.
Asked about current restrictions, he said:

Right, are we allowed to slash the death and hospitalisation rates in half off the back of this then?

You do you, I’m making plans to see my friends and family as normal. Not a chance these criminals are stopping me living my life.
And that's good that seeing your family gives you the happiness getting out into the world gives me. I'll see my dad on Christmas day, then everything will be closed.

Frankly I don't care about Christmas if it leads to months and months of nothing. My only fear over the next week is isolation and lockdown. I'd have no problem getting infected (unboosted - the horror!) But then my dad would have to spend Christmas on his own so I have to isolate for the last few days of freedom.

What does slashing the rates achieve? It’s the numbers actually going in that are important.

If there are 40,000 confirmed cases, and only around half of the people with covid have actually been tested, then that means their estimated case number is 80,000 doesn’t it? If 1% of the 40,000 are being hospitalised, that is now 1% of 80,000 isn’t it? Hypothetically speaking, I know these aren’t actual figures.

I’m not sure what can be done at this point, or even could have been done a few weeks ago. That scientist LL quoted a few pages back, who apparently knows as much about this as anyone, said that no amount of restrictions or lockdowns would be able to stop this variant from spreading.

There don’t appear to be any good options at this point. Let it run through the population like wildfire, and there’s a good chance it overwhelms the NHS, are badly impacted by staffing issues and low traffic due to people being too sick/afraid to go out. Lock the entire country down until summer and you deal what is likely the final death blow to an already struggling hospitality sector, and there’s still a possibility the NHS is overrun in the coming weeks. Glad I’m not the one tasked with making these choices.

I mean, that's because - especially Omicron - is asymptomatic?

If you are asymptomatic, then unless you're testing for a specific reason like work, then why would you test?

Like what does he suggest to change this?

The testing capacity is there, even with the latest surge and the system going down (for all of a few hours, it came right back to book the PCRs) the testing capacity is there. It makes a point when you go to order LFs now that they are available at chemists and some supermarkets.

But unless everybody in the country tests every day, then this will always be the case, because COVID doesn't produce symptoms in a lot of people and Omicron even moreso, especially for those who are boosted.

So Prof Haward has basically stated the obvious there and not offered any solution to it.

Out of interest will you go to Goodison on Sunday? I'm not judging here as I live in the south so barely ever get to a game. And to be honest at the moment I wouldn't really want to anyway. Just wondering if your stance would stop you from going to the game

I think SAGE are already aware of this, it’s them who are telling us it.

They’ve been doing random testing for 18 months to estimate the actual level of Covid in circulation, that’s how they know that the positive test numbers will always underreport the actual amount of Covid positive people.

Surprised they think they're catching even 50% of cases. 1 out of every 60 people in the UK are tested each day. I would have guessed that they're missing at least 5x the number that is put out each day. Especially if 30% or more now have no symptoms.

They are extending boosters to 18-30s on Monday in Northern Ireland. As far as I know it's similar across the UK.

Yes we need to get more people their booster, but equally the opportunity is there to make a booking so people have to physically do it. I've heard people complaining about the process, but the opportunity is there.

And if we have literally all adults eligible for boosters, then why on earth would we consider a lockdown. At what point in time will we ever be as protected again. I'll have had 3 shots inside 6-7 months!

You cannot justify a lockdown in these circumstances, and it will just add to the anti-vax narrative that the vaccines don't work, even though they clearly do. But governments need to start being decisive and show that they believe they work or people will lose faith.

Are we doing around a million tests a day? I'm genuinely interested by the way, I've no idea what our daily test numbers are

I think he’s saying that bed capacity is absolute rather than relative. And that’s the important bit. It’s great that it’s seemingly less deadly. But it’s about number of hospitalisations relative to beds and capacity that’s the issue.
