Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The mutations on the spike protein are concerning so, although initial hospital data from South Africa is encouraging, they are gearing up. Even if it all proves a false alarm it won’t be entirely wasted work as would be good to know how quickly vaccines can be adapted from initial sequencing to production if need arises.

Yeah it's not actually the variant itself that is concerning; it's the fact it's been able to achieve such mutations and still be relatively dangerous, meaning that the next iteration might be a vaccine evader.

For me it again comes down to discerning between cases and hospitalisations. If OMICRON PERSEI 8 spreads more easily, infects more but is less dangerous and still gets largely neutralised by vaccines, then it really should be a case of who gives a toss. It's to be expected as COVID is going to be around in one form or another forever now.

Whilst I agree with the rest of your post I’d contest that this variant, at least at the theoretical level, is concerning as it looks similar to a human engineered one that was pretty nasty in the lab.

But lab tests are not real world hence the scramble to put some metrics around cases/hospitalizations/infectiousness/vaccine effectiveness.

That's actually what I meant - that the real world reported impact from this one seems relatively mild thus far, so it's looking like this isn't going to be 'the one' but does have all the hallmarks of it.
