Has anyone seen any information on death rates of people with the Omicron variant? I just had a look and couldn’t find anything. I realise it’s very early days and there aren’t loads of cases so maybe the information isn’t out there yet

Not seen anything yet, all I’ve seen is some hospital data but even that is hard to parse given vaccination rates in SA although ”mild” description is encouraging.

It'll be a case of them tweaking the vaccines for further roll outs perhaps, but there should be more than enough natural immunity plus the vaccine protection on top to fight off any variant.

There will be concerns, as @LinekersLegs just pointed out, but surely if it's a different amount of spike proteins altogether then is it even COVID-19?

It was saying yesterday that the current vaccines covered this new variant, so why do they need to make another vaccine specifically for that?

It won't take them long at all - because they've already been doing it for the boosters

The mutations on the spike protein are concerning so, although initial hospital data from South Africa is encouraging, they are gearing up. Even if it all proves a false alarm it won’t be entirely wasted work as would be good to know how quickly vaccines can be adapted from initial sequencing to production if need arises.

Showmanship from Javid over this isolation stuff. They know full well that they can't do anything to stop it spreading. Just attempting to mask their uselessness.

All looks pretty good in terms of T cell immunity and disease severity though thankfully.

Why is this one 'potentially vaccine ending'?

There's not one variant so far that has been immune to the vaccines. And there almost certainly won't be. Plus, you've got loads of people (isn't it like forecasted that 70% or something of over 16s in the UK) who have had COVID now.
