Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

My boss is about to bury her son this weekend following his death last week due to COVID.

He was 42 in good health with no underlying health conditions.

He was on a ventilator for 35 days and during this time he crashed 4 times, each time they managed to restart his heart. At the end he had multiple blood clots in his lungs. His body was riddled with staph infections in his lungs and heart valves. One of his lungs collapsed and his kidneys began to fail. In the end his body literally gave up as it couldn’t fight anymore and his heart finally stopped for the last time.

He was unvaccinated

My thoughts are that if you can be vaccinated then for gods sake do it if you value your life and care about your family and friends,

This thing kills and in the end it’s real nasty the way you die.

80% of the country is vaccinated, the reminaing 20% ow whatever it is are mainly the ones considered “not vulnerable” however they are saying we have higher numbers than last year at this stage and the NHS will crumble again.

How does that make sense if this vaccine is supposed to work? Either the vaccine isn’t working or there exaggerating something. Does not add up.

Hospital figures - 159 deaths were announced today, up 4 on yesterday and up 7 on last Wednesday’s total of 152. 121 deaths were in English hospitals, down 21 on yesterday, no data available for last week. The 7 day rolling average rises to 117.71

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 201 deaths were announced today, up 16 on yesterday and up 10 on last Wednesday’s total of 191. The 7 day rolling average rises to an even 139

For the 60 day cut off, 236 deaths were announced today, up 14 on yesterday and up 20 on last Wednesday’s total of 216. The 7 day rolling average rises to 161.57

Possibly it's a US thing, all that Qanon stuff maybe. There's none of that over here.

Only time will tell. I'd say 5 years with no long term effects showing, no birth defects present, stuff like that. I'm not in a risk group, my kids aren't in a risk group so we're not having it. It annoys me that any kind of skepticism has been waved off as "anti vax lunacy". I've had all my other vaccines, my children have had theirs and will continue to have theirs.

In fact all this "trust the science bro" talk is coming across like "trust the weapons inspectors" and "trust the big banks, they're too big to fail" talk to me. Maybe I've been conditioned to be hyper skeptical by decades of lying, murderous, corrupt, warmongering politicians.

When Tony "I don't care if it's a children's hospital send another JDAM" Blair is insisting I do something then I tend to do the opposite.
The prevalence of QAnon certainly doesn’t help that is for sure.

I can appreciate that being lumped in with anti-vaxers must be annoying and having all my life suffered from the significant side effects of a drug (DES) that was prescribed to my mother whilst pregnant I perhaps more than most can understand some hesitancy about long term effects - I certainly wasn’t going to be part of the initial vaccine trial groups!

However I believe the science is reassuring on the safety of vaccines because of how they work with your body and the very short time frame side effects are likely to occur. If interested I found this a very informative article.

This is what I wanna know too tbh

So sorry to hear this mate, condolences to your boss.

It is sadly a story that has been repeated many times across many places the past few months.

Maybe the measures that were still in place last year that aren't now (Social Distancing, mask wearing, encouragement to sanitise regularly etc) were more effective at halting this thing than was originally given credit

Last year life was nothing like it is now. We are living 99% as normal at the moment. Does looking at the deaths graph not explain how the vaccine is working?
Whether it's working well enough to avoid overwhelming hospitals on its own is different. Nobody is saying the NHS will crumble either...

Feels a bit like banging one's head against a brick wall... how can people not see this vaccine works? Every time the country opened last year cases rocketed and deaths with them. It was quiet last Summer as numbers started at such a low point following the lockdown, that's the way exponential growth works.
We now have it at a point where normal life sees an equilibrium in cases and deaths at a much lower % of cases than ever before.

Can people really not comprehend that with normal life, and no vaccine, the latest sloping increase would be a mountain?

Vaccination, although very effective against severe disease even against Delta, is still not 100% especially for those immune compromised.

But the key bit is your statement “20%..is mainly the ones considered “not vulnerable””.

Turns out some of them are very vulnerable to Delta - perhaps not for death but certainly for a hospital stay and Covid patients take a hell of a lot of work/resources. 20% is still a lot of at risk people in a population over 65 million, especially with a health service that is already trying to catch up on a backlog of cases with an exhausted staff.
