Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The sector, traditional wet pubs, has been in decline for years. Slow decline, but nevertheless.

3 pubs of varying business models have gone near me, all covid linked. One had converted itself into a wedding venue, with an attached pub, so that didnt last long. Another just hasnt reopened, and a 3rd was purchased by new owners late Jan, last year, who packed it in pretty quick as well. Again, they had planned a big spend to upgrade and alter the model.
All perfect examples of attempting to adapt and survive.

Of course, they cant all do that - which is why there's a long term trend of a declining sector (sonething that @Brennan apparently cant take in).

I don't live in India.
Nowhere's safe until everywhere's safe. That's the nature of a pandemic.

We have seen the northern hemisphere in a tailspin; then we saw the southern hemisphere catch fire (South Africa, Brazil, India) when we all thought they were somehow better positioned to withstand it. Only the Far East seems to have the answer, and it has less to do with the vaccines and more to do with virus suppression.

Less chance of that now than last year, but there could be a mini wave.
14(?) months ago, I saw a graph projecting 5 decreasing waves, but that was in a 'perfect scenario' without politicians...and general member of the public idiots...acting daft.
*looks to Liverpool*

Tell that to China or New Zealand.

Whats happening in India is terrible, but it has no impact on us.

Just like when we were struggling, our struggle had no impact on India.

The war is over, we won, get your swill on.
"The war is over."

By the end of this weekend there'll have been about 20,000 people who've been in close proximity with zero social distancing and zero mask wearing who's job it is then - as part of an experiment agreed by Liverpool politicians and its chief health officer with the Tories - to go into their communities and see how much damage can be done to them in terms of infection spread.

That's the type of country we live in. That's how far away from crank decisions we are that can cause surges.

If there is a spike in Liverpool after these scab activities you can be sure of one thing: the scum who agreed to them like Rotheram and Ashton (who were in cahoots causing the winter disaster in Liverpool) will disappear. Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan.

You do know that every single person there had negative test results?

Lateral flow tests. They are not seen as reliable in scientific community.

The point of the whole project is to take note and track possible infections. They are not being set up to allow people in the non-vaccinated groups to mingle safely. What would be the point of that?

There was a small rise for bistro type pubs, but a continued shake out of the traditional public house sector...and the trend (which was my point afterall) is a decline for well over a decade.

@peteblue - will you bring some sanity here - you are in the sector. Can you inform this young man of the decline, as he seems to be closed to me.

Thanks.

It’s certainly true that the number of pubs had been continually falling for many years, but it does look like it has bottomed out. The sector itself is going through massive change, the scruffy old boozer is being replaced by much bigger and better funded places by the major brewers. Marstons for instance had a deliberate policy of getting rid of smaller pubs (hence we were able to buy ours) but then putting large amounts of money into those providing accommodation and meals etc.
So I would sum it up by saying, yes without doubt the number of pubs has been in decline for many years, but those now left standing are changing and improving their offerings so the sector is quite healthy and being invested in. Again, just in our own pub, we have replaced every single piece of kit from fridges, glass washers etc to all of the kit in the cellar. The whole of the interior had a major refurbishment plus replacement of all furniture during the first lockdown (as a lot of pubs did) and ripped out and updated all the toilets. The outside had a similar facelift and we’ve spent a serious amount of money doing it. I’ve noticed quite a few other village pubs in the surrounding areas with scaffolding up and major refurbs going on. Everyone is looking to up their game and bring in the families who will provide tomorrow’s customers. Those still standing after years of decline and a year of Covid will prosper.....

Test events, like the few thousands at Wembley the other weekend. You dont start training for a marathon with a 26 mile run do you?

Why words like scabs and scum though?

What a weird little man.

Couple of Kopite acumbags like Rotheram and Ashton need calling out. They actually demanded from the Tories that Liverpool should pilot these schemes because they want the spiv ecnomy here back up and running an making money.

So, in summary: spiv scum and scab are highly appropriate terms of refernce for these people.

There are people in Liverpool who have been shielding for a year who thiught that they could look forward to a decent summer vaccinated and living in communitoes with a small amount of infection only...and npw these divvies have decided to use their "pilot scemes" to threow a spanner in the works. They must feel like giving up.
