R&D underway to make a vaccine against all coronaviruses including variants and any new coronaviruses that might emerge- ‘more than two dozen "pancoronavirus" vaccine projects are underway’.
This is how well the vaccines (mainly single shot AstraZeneca) are performing in the UK- each age group reaching high antibody levels with the over 70s now at over 80% +ve - a powerful shield.

That's very much my take on it. The Serum Institute is vital to global supplies, and as you say, it's under growing pressure to provide more and more domestically. That's the only logical difference between India and Pakistan right now, in terms of how they're treated from a Covid perspective anyway.
