Saving lives will be the justification for further lockdowns. Johnson would win an election today despite 125,000 deaths. You see it in this thread, people are generally scared and will comply with lockdowns. Personally I've just realised its time to adjust to the 'new normal' and just admit that lockdown is life now.

Elimination strategies are impossible. Never going to happen.

It does feel like a never-ending nightmare but that is partially because of the Tory's total aversion to locking the country down, not because they want more. If they had done so immediately instead of being more focused upon the economy we would most likely not be living with 120,000 deaths.

If they'd taken control of our borders we may have had an experience more akin to those countries that did not follow the loose mitigating strategy that we did. We could, if required, follow an elimination strategy - these border measures are a step in that direction. We just have taken a very hard lesson over the last 12 months but I cannot see us or future generations making the same sorts of mistakes again.

Once people are vaccinated there really is no excuse.

Shutting down the globe for something which has a mortality rate below or around 1% is bad enough as it is, but it's been done to ensure that the mortality rate did stay that low, I know.

Shutting stuff down when people have been vaccinated against said illness, rendering it about as dangerous as the common cold (which some people do end up in hospital with) isn't on.

I do understand what you are saying but the danger is not just the mortality rate, it's also the impact that the virus has had on health and care systems globally. A hospital bursting with Covid patients impacts across the board including upon people with other health needs as we have seen.

People say the Torys hate lockdowns and they've locked down late which is true but surely the UK has spent the most days in total in lockdown out of every nation? Nobody else has been on lockdown 3 times totalling roughly 9 months?

Do you think it might be fair to say that these repeated lengthy lockdowns were because the government acted slowly in reacting to the virus and enforcing measures, and too quickly in reducing/stopping these measures?

This was a path that was learned after the first SARS outbreak and we should have followed instead of initially modeling against influenza.

TBF we are all in lockdown, thats the mad thing, i think perhaps things may have been more librel on the main land then they are in Ireland or the UK.

Sorry, yeah I know everywhere still is.

I mean, they're going/have gone 'back into' lockdown. UK has obviously just stayed in it and is hopefully (hopefully) close to getting out of it (relatively speaking).

I know.

That's why I'd want to see more and more money pumped into that to ensure capacity is better later in the year if needed.

60% rise in serious domestic abuse and that only includes what’s being reported.

Mental health problems for all ages going through the roof.

Lets lock down forever.

It's easy to detach yourself from all of this if you keep forgetting that Covid-19 is just nature's way of taking out the thrash.

Whats weird is I cant really remember what normal is/was anymore.

This virus has certainly left a scar on the world thats going to take many years to fade imo

It's certainly left a scar on me. I've been the one giving other people a wide berth, in normal times it's the other way around.

You couldn't make it up, AZ do themselves no favors:

All seems a bit vague. May and could sort of thing. I just wish they would be more explicit with what the actual issues are.

Even if it turns out to be something of nothing, the bad press will have already further damaged the under fire company.

As per Davek’s request for more info regarding EU countries....I see we now have a situation where Spain will only give the AZ vaccine to the under 65’s and France will only give it to the over 55’s.....now I’m an Engineer by profession, not a Medical person or a Scientist, but something tells me that the ‘science’ being used across the EU doesn’t really match up. So who is right, Spain, France or neither of them.....

Not really arsed about a big-pharma company

But I am arsed about people not getting vaccinated when they should be
