It's been mutating for months and months. @Tubey made that point a week or so ago that they've found new strains in plenty of places.

All our scientists have done is find the new strain, and now everywhere in the world will obviously start looking for it - and start picking it up.

I'm mad that our government are using it as an excuse for further restrictions, whereas really all that knackered them up was them undermining their own Tier system by not putting the capital and surrounding areas into tougher restrictions a month back.

The infections/deaths rising is what will drive new restrictions. Obviously.

Not only that, this one actually started in September. So for it to only now be responsible for a rapid rise in one area makes no sense whatsoever.

And the infections/deaths rising were due to the government not putting those areas I mentioned into Tier 3.

Yorkshire has been in lockdown and then Tier 3 for 8 weeks now. And it's halved the infection rate (or had done before Xmas).

The north, proper north, will likely go up a tier and it has nothing to do with this new mutation. They might spin it that way but it’s irrelevant; only the stats matter.

We're both arguing the same point.

They're gonna spin it that it's this new mutation. When really it's got nothing to do with that. So just be honest.

All this mutation does is give them a reason to extend restrictions beyond what should be reasonable come spring, IMO - obviously this is hoping that by April we're fully rolling out the vaccines to those that need it as a priority.

Well we’re not arguing the same point.

You’ll say we don’t need new restrictions because this thing has been around for longer than the media claim (not arsed, don’t watch the news) and thus is an overreaction.

I’ll say if the stats are going up we need new restrictions whether they spin it as a new mutate or an infection brought to us by aliens or is just the original strain.

TBF these things do take a bit of time to spread; 2-3 months from first detection to being everywhere is what we'd expect to see.

It also is yet another reminder of how the official Chinese narrative is likely to be very wrong.

Bold bit being key.

Amazingly the virus was polite enough to stick largely to the south-east instead. Nice of it.

Telegraph on Oxford vaccine....

“The Oxford vaccine will be rolled out from January 4 across the country under plans being drawn up by ministers, The Telegraph can reveal.

The Government is aiming for two million people to receive their first dose of either the Oxford vaccine or the Pfizer jab within a fortnight as part of a major ramping up of the inoculation programme.

The Telegraph can also disclose that mass vaccination centres at sports stadiums and conference venues are primed to launch in the second week of January, provided the regulator approves the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine within days.

The rollout of the Oxford vaccine, which is easier to store and handle than the Pfizer jab and costs less, is likely to make it easier to reach people living in the most secluded areas of England.

The Government has ordered 100 million jabs, with the majority expected to be rolled out by March next year. Senior Government sources said that approval could come as soon as Sunday after the company submitted its final tranche of data to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on Monday evening.”

excellent news.......

100m by march.
That means this thing is as good as over doesn't it?

No, I'm saying that the new mutation isn't the reason for the restrictions. So just be honest about it. Don't put people into panic mode - which is all this is.

And panic and fear can be used to get people to do stuff like get some people to call people selfish for worrying about their jobs, their businesses, or going on a run.

Or, you know, get people into a mode where they think it's impossible to return to normality until every single last person on earth is vaccinated - and I'll happily have whatever vaccine is available to me as soon as it is, btw.

No, it means whoever the Telegraph is talking to has told them the usual pro-government leaked positive spin piece, which the usual gull is now regurgitating for us on here.

They'll get a lot of people vaccinated by the end of March, but the numbers involved are so big that it will take more than 90 days to do enough people to start to get an immunity built in to the population (remember even the Oxford jab is two doses, twenty days apart). If there are no problems then midway through 2021 is probably when this phase of this will be over. What is going to be important then is what we as a country learn from this, and do about it.
